Cummins CEO moves company forward after record civil emissions fine

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Cummins Inc. CEO Jennifer Rumsey is moving the engine-maker and power distribution company forward after paying a record civil fine for emissions cheating that she said brought some over-the-top federal criticism.

Cummins in December settled a 4 ½-year-old case by paying a civil fine of $1.675 billion to the Environmental Protection Agency. About 1 million engines in Ram pickup trucks — Cummins’ biggest-selling engine program — contained data-defeating emissions software. The...

How Congress aims to reduce carbon emissions in shipping

A container ship is docked at port with shipping containers in the background.

Legislators this week introduced the Clean Shipping Act of 2022, which if passed, would amend the Clean Air Act to establish standards that limit the carbon intensity of fuel used by certain vessels.

The bill aims to protect the port communities’ health, address environmental injustice and bring climate solutions to the table.

“We no longer have the luxury of waiting to act,” Rep. Alan Lowenthal, D-Calif., one of the sponsors of the bill, said in a statement. “This legislation will set clear...

A Freightliner Cascadia on the highway

The Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) is suing the California Air Resources Board for moving too quickly to implement pollution regulation changes in the state.

The EMA claims in a lawsuit filed Friday in the U.S. District Court in Central California that stringent emission standards, test procedures and other emission-related requirements adopted by the agency ignore the Clean Air Act provision that gives manufacturers at least four years to comply.

California adopted its...

EPA preparing nationwide truck emissions regulation

The Biden administration will soon propose a regulation aimed at cutting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from heavy-duty trucks. It would be the first such regulation since 2001.

The Environmental Protection Agency “is working on a proposed rule to reduce pollution from heavy-duty vehicles and engines that would significantly cut NOx emissions and update [greenhouse gas] standards for certain categories,” EPA spokesman Rick Conger stated in an email to FreightWaves. “These standards, currently...

Strict rules key to sustainable transportation, climate policy expert says

Dan Becker shares insights into transportation-related climate policy.

FreightWaves recently chatted with Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign, to learn about how transportation-related climate change policy works.

After law school, Becker fought to pass legislation such as the Clean Air Act, California’s vehicular emissions law, AB 1493, President Barack Obama’s clean car standards and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund program for cleaning up toxic waste in places such as Love Canal.

Becker ran the global warming and...
