EIA: Power generation from renewables outpaced coal in 2022

The amount of electricity generated in the U.S. in 2022 from renewable sources was greater than that generated from coal, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

This is the first time that power generation from coal has been outpaced by renewable sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass and geothermal, EIA said in a March 27 report. Renewable power generation also surpassed nuclear generation for a second consecutive year in 2022.

Coal far from dead: Global trade thrives, war reroutes shipping

Photo showing coal exports

“The market has spoken: Coal is dying” declared a September 2019 headline in CNN Business, after China announced it would cease funding overseas coal projects. “Coal is dead. Power to the people!” activist group 350.org triumphantly tweeted.

These predictions have not aged well. Bulk cargo vessels full of coal crisscross the oceans. Storage areas are so full of coal near ports in the Netherlands and Belgium that iron ore storage space is being commandeered.

The period between 1800 and 1850 has been termed the Canal Era in United States history. Since the country’s founding after the War of Independence, the new nation’s leaders understood the need for a network of internal improvements to make continental transportation easier.

Utilities: Will we have coal when it’s cold?

A photograph of a Union Pacific train hauling coal over a mountainous landscape.

U.S. utilities are facing record low coal stockpiles ahead of winter, and congestion on the rails as well as the uncertainty of the vaccine mandate are only adding to the stress.

“Coal shippers are concerned about the full range of factors affecting the rail supply chain at this point, including labor shortages and the possibility of labor interruptions,” John Ward, executive director of the National Coal Transportation Association, told FreightWaves. “Relatively mild fall weather may have eased...

There are many people interested in former transportation companies, whether they were trucking companies, railroads, airlines or ocean lines. These companies are called “fallen flags,” and the term describes companies whose corporate names have been dissolved through merger, bankruptcy or liquidation.

Today’s FreightWaves Classics profiles another fallen flag – the Tennessee Central Railway (TC reporting mark; better known as “The Nashville Route”).

First containers, then dry bulk, now LNG shipping rates are spiking

LNG shipping

“I don’t remember a time when so many extreme events were happening in shipping,” said Stifel analyst Ben Nolan, who has been covering the sector for the past 16 years.

Container shipping led the charge, with rates soaring to stratospheric highs. Dry bulk shipping rates jumped next, to levels not seen in over a decade. Now liquefied natural gas shipping has joined the party. LNG rates “surged 40% in one day — Friday — on already high levels,” Nolan wrote in his weekly report.

Dry bulk shipping rates hit $80,000 per day as buyers scramble for coal

dry bulk shipping

Yet another sign of stress for energy supplies and global supply chains: Spot rates for large dry cargo ships just topped $80,000 per day for the first time since 2009, and freight derivatives for the fourth quarter — a period when rates for these vessels normally pull back — just spiked.

Not long ago, it was a different story. On Sept. 20, headlines were dominated by Chinese property developer Evergrande and its impending collapse; fallout to construction and steel demand would assumedly hit...
