Conf call redux: CH Robinson mutes analysts

US forwarder CH Robinson had a mixed bag of results in 2020, with Q4 and full-year financials out last week.
The core North American Surface Transportation unit limped to little more than a flat year.
But in Forwarding, Robinson went from strength to strength (our Premium take here).
In the customary post-results conference call between management and the analyst community, the analysts were, in fact, not allowed to speak.
Instead, questions were pre-submitted.
Yawn.
Inevitably, the …

Conf call redux: DSV’s ‘day of joy and happiness’

Another day, another round of belting Q3 results in logistics, this time from Denmark’s DSV about a week ago.
Like many of their peers, the Danes are riding the pandemic wave… just don’t mention Panalpina, or even organic growth. At least, not yet. Well, maybe.
Either way. Management were in fine fettle during Q3’s analyst conference call, touching on a wide range of topics, from second waves, to Brexit.
As usual, we’ve creatively …

Conf call redux: Kuehne + Nagel’s 2020? So far, so 2019

‘Pedalling hard to stand still’ is probably as good a way as any to describe Kuehne+Nagel’s Q3 results.
Our most up-to-date nitty gritty on lofty matters, such as the Swiss forwarder’s valuation, can be accessed here.
But as usual we’ve also composed a more readable version of results day by lopping container loads of management-speak from the obligatory conference call.
The result? An abridged and not-exactly verbatim summary of management’s view (or lack …

Conf call redux: Keeping mum at AP Møller-Mærsk

It’s been a big week for AP Møller-Mærsk (APMM) news, what with Damco’s death sentence and thousands of potential job cuts in the offing.
(Background and bragging rights: check out the three “most popular” stories on The Loadstar’s homepage here)
Rumours abounded even ahead of the Danish line’s Q2 results, but you would never have guessed it listening to management share their numbers during the obligatory quarterly conference call with analysts – which, however, contained other relevant …

Conf call redux: Management glee at DSV’s ‘best ever’

DSV executives could barely contain their glee as they discussed the Danish 3PL’s ‘best-ever’ quarterly results with the analyst community on the Q2 conference call.
Of course, it didn’t go unremarked that DSV’s financials have been affected to the upside somewhat by the acquisition of major rival Panalpina.
CEO Jens Bjørn Andersen was, however, at giddy pains to stress that DSV’s positive Q2 performance runs much deeper than acquired revenues, not least …

Conf call redux: CH Robinson’s ‘solid’ 12% drop in net revenue…

The times they are a changin’, when companies can report double-digit falls across their financials and still boast a ‘solid’ quarterly performance.
This week, CH Robinson, announced Q2 results with a headline 11.6%, drop in net revenues to $614.5m, and operating profits down 17%, to $188.8m.
(Some bright spots? Here. While the growth performance, among others, of integrated logistics firm UPS, is here.)
Hey-ho. Could be worse, not least if you are a furloughed CH …

Conf call redux: Kuehne + Nagel – Now ‘optimally variabilised’, M&A strategy unchanged

Swiss forwarder Kuehne+Nagel has trumpeted its Q2/half-year results as not being as bad as expected.
In the circumstances, that’s probably about as good as can be expected – and then here is what you might have to expect next.
During the obligatory conference call with analysts, CEO Detlef Trefzger explained, without ever really explaining, how cost savings have kept the wolves from the door, all the while barely allowing his CFO to …

(Belated) Conf call redux: With ‘clever’ AP Møller Mærsk, customers always pick up the tab

For too long shipping lines have been hostage to the fickle vagaries of the fuel market.
The burden is immense and unpredictable, not least lately, when ships have had to convert to greener bunker fuel at great cost to their owners.
In some respects, it’s surprising it’s taken so long for shipping lines to bump that risk onto customers.
Step forward AP Møller Mærsk Group (APMM), which, despite the global pandemic, had a …

Conf call redux: Keeping it brief at CH Robinson

With ever-more conference calls taking up so much of our time these days, US forwarder CH Robinson has hit upon a novel means of wrapping them up swiftly.
Don’t let anyone speak. Except the execs.
To keep its quarterly earnings calls brief (sort of), the US forwarder now asks analysts to submit questions in writing beforehand, then dial in to listen to the response.
The strategy succeeds in a) somewhat shortening a tedious …

Conf call redux: Kuehne + Nagel: We’re not firing people. Period.

Unlike some rivals, Swiss forwarder Kuehne + Nagel (K+N) has navigated the Covid-19 crisis largely without shedding staff, much to the disappointment of analysts.
Like all quarterly conference calls, K+N’s Q1 ’20 hookup went on a bit, with a strong focus on cost cutting, or, in the view of some dialling in, the lack thereof.
As usual, we’ve saved you the hassle of listening to the whole snooze-inducing 1hr23m by creatively lopping …
