3 tips to boost your CSA scores

There is a well-known saying: “Everyone is responsible for workplace safety.” While this holds some truth, it fails to mention that accountability is the other side of the coin. Everyone should do their part to ensure safe operations, but laws are in place for companies and key personnel to be held accountable for safety in their workplaces.

Countless commercial drivers share the road with the general public for long hours each day, and they operate equipment from 25,000 pounds to 80,000 pounds...

ELD transfer violation could cause snowball effect on CSA scores

Up until December, motor carriers’ Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores weren’t impacted by a common hours-of-service violation: A driver not being able to transfer logs to a law enforcement officer during roadside inspections.

But now, the once zero-point violation could cost carriers at least three points and potentially more.

“This is pretty significant because what happens here is not only can we get hit with that one violation, but that could lead to several other violations,...

Tackling high CSA scores could help fleets recruit and retain drivers

Truck drivers with drug violations not returning to work

Drivers are the greatest assets of fleets, but recruiting and retaining drivers remains one of the trucking industry’s biggest pain points. According to 2020 data from the American Trucking Associations, driver turnover rates for small and large truckload fleets are 69% and 90%, respectively.

Fleets of all sizes are beginning to look within their operational structures and make changes that create a more optimal and supportive environment for drivers to be successful. Believe it or not, a...

US senator demands answers from FMCSA on truck crashes

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, has accused the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of failing to properly oversee the country’s commercial trucking industry and is demanding that the agency answer for it.

The allegations by Markey, a prominent member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, follow an investigation into commercial truck crashes published in August by The Boston Globe.

The investigation revealed how trucking companies in Massachusetts and...

FMCSA ‘struggling’ with under-21 CDL pilot for military vets

Lack of participation in a program meant to address a shortfall of drivers entering the trucking industry is forcing regulators to adjust.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be extending its Under 21 Military Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Pilot Program beyond the three-year period typically set by Congress for such projects, according to FMCSA Deputy Administrator Wiley Deck.

“We are struggling trying to get drivers into the program,” Deck acknowledged during a...

Squelch high CSA scores to broaden your insurance options

Sometimes it’s best not to be in the upper percentile. That is certainly the case for Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) BASICs scores. Not only do the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and curious shippers regularly view this information, but these scores also play a major role in determining whether or not a motor carrier or owner-operator will be classified as a high risk to insurers.

Insurance rates are on the rise thanks to factors such as distracted driving and...

The identity crisis of a non-rated motor carrier

Motor carrier safety ratings are a big deal, and they should be. Safety has become the industry’s top concern as compensatory payments and increased insurance premiums stemming from accidents have increased annually. With that being said, it’s understandable for a shipper to preferably contract with the highest-rated carriers.

Safety ratings, however, don’t often paint an accurate picture of the current performance of a company. Worse, obtaining a satisfactory rating has become an almost...
