Damen launches two hybrid-electric ferries for BC ferries

Damen shipyards launched a pair of hybrid-electric ferries for the Canadian ferry operator, BC Ferries. Both vessels are now fitted out in order to begin operations next year. The vessels will have the capacity of carrying 300 passengers and crew and 47 vehicles.

Mainly, according to Damen’s press release, BC Ferries is upgrading its fleet, and will see a number of new vessels operating in the province of British Colombia, on Canada’s Pacific coastline.

European shipbuilders join forces to advance vessel connectivity

Some of the biggest European shipbuilders announced that they have created a new cooperative initiative to develop a connected vessel platform. This project is named Code Kilo and aims to address the digitalization challenges of various stakeholders.

Specifically, EUROYARDS members –  Chantiers de l’Atlantique, Damen Shipyards Group, Fincantieri, Lürssen, Meyer Werft, Naval Group and Navantia – collaborated to improve data management solutions and standards.

Seismic vessels complete tandem drydocking at Damen Shipyard

Sister-vessels, Oceanic Sirius and Oceanic Vega have completed a round-the-clock, 10-day maintenance programme at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam (DSAm). For eight of those days the two 106-metre vessels were in the yard’s 250-metre drydock no.4 in a tandem arrangement, to maximise the efficient use of resources.

The naming ceremony has been held for two custom tugs built by Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld for De Boer Remorquage SARL, a joint venture between Dutch Dredging and Iskes Towage and Salvage. The ceremony took place in the port of Cayenne in French Guyana. Both vessels represent innovative solutions and one of them has additional modifications that enable it to undertake dredging and other associated activities.

Ship-to-ship LNG bunkering to take place in Baltic Sea

Estonian energy company, Eesti Gaas and Damen Shipyards signed a contract for the construction of the first of a series of short-sea LNG bunker vessels to operate in the Baltic Sea.

The LGC 6000 LNG class vessel, is planned to be delivered in September 2020, and aims to boost the wider adoption of LNG as an alternative fuel in the North-east Baltic Sea, by providing ship-to-ship distribution service for the first time.
