Cox Powertrain’s new diesel outboard to hit market in November

The workboat world is embracing outboard engines today more than it has in the past. More patrol boats, support vessels, special military crew carriers, and other boats that used to rely on small to midsized inboard diesels are moving to outboards.

Safety and convenience are the major reasons for the shift. If an engine has to be changed out, for example, it’s much easier to replace an outboard than an inboard engine. Or if an engine fails in hostile waters, there is more than one outboard...

Barge grain movements decrease 10% over last week

For the week ending Oct. 5, barge grain movements totaled 507,298 tons. This is a 10% decrease from the previous week and 6% less than the same period last year. For the week ending Oct. 5, 314 grain barges moved down river. This is 41 fewer barges than the previous week. There were 669 grain barges unloaded in New Orleans, 2% fewer than the previous week.

During the same period, 35 ocean-going grain vessels were loaded in the Gulf — 13% more than the same period last year. Forty-five vessels...

IMO 2020 Implementation Could Be Smoother Than Expected, Says IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) disclosed that it had changed its view on IMO 2020 fallout and now believes that the IMO 2020 implementation could well be much smoother than expected, reports American Shipper.

Diesel prices spark

The disaster scenario for the International Maritime Organization’s 2020 fuel rule (IMO 2020) goes like this: Ships without exhaust-gas scrubbers must switch en masse to more expensive low-sulfur fuel on Jan. 1.

To meet demand, refineries produce more...

Oil Industry’s Explores Solutions To Tackle Sulfur Problems

  • Apart from CO2 emissions, critics are concerned about the sulfur oxides that come from burning high-sulfur fuel by ships.
  • One gallon of high-sulfur fuel contains 3,500 gallons of gasoline and is deemed to be harmful to humans and as well for the environment.
  • The new fuels are expected to be much pricier, adding to shipping expenses and, as such, the cost of global trade.

According to an article published in Bloomberg Quint, critics of the oil industry tend to fixate on carbon emissions, with...

What Impact Does Shipping Fuel Shift Exert on the Global Oil Market?

A United Nations mandate on the shipping industry to remove up to 85% of the sulfur content from its fuel to cut 3% of global carbon dioxide emissions could throw the industry into massive disruption.

Some analysts argue it could lead to fuel supply and demand imbalances and arbitrage opportunities that could extend crude oil price volatility, reports Forbes.

Aftermath of the financial crisis

The industry is still in a financial tailspin since the financial crisis, but the technology is ready...

What Will Happen When IMO2020 Hits?

It’s all over but the shouting. That’s how John Kingston describes the oil market in his article published in the Freight Waves.

It’s a perfect description of where the oil market stands – and by extension, the trucking and rail markets – as we await the introduction of IMO 2020 over the next few months.

Lot of Brain Power Analysing the Issue

We say “it’s all over but the shouting” because the market is at the point where the conferences have been held, various research agencies have produced...

Asian Oil Refiners Riding High on 2020 Fuel Rules?

According to an article published in World Oil, the imminent overhaul of global ship-fuel regulations is finally delivering a long-awaited benefit to Asian oil refiners.

How high are profits?

Profits from turning crude into diesel in the second half of 2019 are forecast to be about 31% higher than the first six months, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

Margins have already expanded around 40% since late April as International Maritime Organization rules that prohibit ships from using dirty...

IMO 2020 Diesel Demand To Help Refining Margins Improve

  • Solid diesel demand expected ahead of IMO 2020.
  • Company’s Q2 profit down by 42% to 498 billion won ($420.91 million).
  • Gasoil cracks to increase in Q4 due to pre-stocking.
  • Plans to start its own desulphurisation unit in 2020.

South Korea’s SK Innovation, owner of South Korea’s biggest oil refiner SK Energy, said that refining margins are expected to improve, driven by solid diesel demand before new rules on marine fuels take effect from 2020, reports Reuters.

Second quarter profit

Little-Known Oil Product Snapped Up for Ship Fuel in China

  • China embraces the use of a lesser known LCO to tackle the struggles with low profits, to be blended with diesel or fuel oil
  • Higher demand for diesel from shipping and need for less dirtier fuel made LCO popular and imports exceed in April and May.
  • Diesel demand is supported from agriculture and unreported bunkering use in China.
  • China’s apparent diesel demand point to a more than 9% decline in April-May versus the previous year and Gasoil is currently trading near a four-month high.

IMO 2020 Set To Raise Iron Ore Freight Rates

  • Iron ore freight rates might face an increase between iron ore producers Brazil, Australia and Indonesia, to the largest importer China with IMO 2020 implementation.
  • Ships switching to lower sulfur fuels from typical bunker fuel oil may raise costs in hauling the commodity, with higher impact on longer voyages.
  • Brazilian iron ore shipments to China will see largest increases, due to distance travelled, potentially rising by over US$6/mt more than 40%.
  • Freight from Australia and Indonesia to...
