Wire services light up supply chain transition

Shipping goods remains a physical act, but the administration around trade is being transformed by the digital revolution that is sweeping across the globe and that has been accelerated by the pandemic.

Digitalisation has certainly brought new products and features to the shipping market with lines taking advantage of technological developments to provide upgraded and innovative services to their customers, such as the guaranteed options for delivery at a higher price, and to improve their...

Maritime digital development is making steady progress

Maritime is catching other industries up in the race to digitalise business according to essDOCS CEO Alexander Goulandris, who was speaking at the Timber & Technology conference on 8 April.

Goulandris told the audience that just 0.1% of bills of lading were digitalised, while digital certificates of origin were less than 30% of the total and phytosanitary certificates comprised less than 10% of the total number of certificates issued according to figures from the Digital Container Shipping...

Top Carriers Embrace Track & Trace Standards

  • Nine of the container-shipping industry’s top carriers have adopted the open-source, free track and trace (T&T) standards developed by the association.
  • The members of the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) are CMA CGM, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Maersk, MSC, ONE, Yang Ming and Zim.
  • Five members now have the application programming interface (API) in production or testing.

Digitalisation: An arrow in shipping’s quiver or hackers’ ace in the hole?

Digitalisation in the maritime sector remains a double-edged sword, because while technology and digital tools support the supply chain significantly, these same tools have opened new vulnerabilities.

Competition in the digital arena is the reflex response from the shipping sector designed to compete at every level. The industry, however, must relearn its reactions to develop a collaborative mind-set when developing cyber systems, particularly where cybersecurity is concerned.

Increased...

Port call optimisation: Two sides of the same coin

Good communications are critical for developing just-in-time ship calls at ports, giving both the lines and port facilities predictability as ships arrive.  To achieve this predictability the industry and academic authors of this article claim that a new business logic is needed.

In recent years strong emphasis has been placed on port call optimisation to facilitate just-in-time shipping. Diverse initiatives to standardise processes and communications conducted within the port, with visiting...

Ports are at the heart of supply chain digitalisation

Ports and terminals are at the centre of the digitalisation process in the container shipping industry, as one of the integral parts of the supply chain. The improvements on their operational efficiency, the increase in their security and safety and the enhancement of the connection between their digital tools with shipping lines’ technology systems have been at the forefront in the digital transition of the industry.

Click and connect; clever boxes supply the link in the chain

Digital supply chains require information that is instantly accessible in order for the chain to hold together. Smart containers will supply that link, offering stakeholders greater visibility of the end-to-end logistics connections. Hanane Becha, Todd Frazier, Michael Schroeder, and Jaco Voorspuij explain what is needed to achieve smart supply chains and how to get there.

Smart Container solutions empower supply chain stakeholders to enhance their operations using reliable physical data to...

Rebuilding the maritime ecosystem, a job for innovators

Business re-engineering is critical as new technology offers new tracks to follow rather than re-treading old avenues. Synchronisation and connectivity are key to avoid Professor Hammer’s trap of “paving the cow paths”.

Numerous initiatives building upon digitalisation, standardisation and collaboration are now underway to increase the efficiency and sustainability of maritime transport. The areas of focus have been to enhance the synchronisation and connectivity between ship and port...

DCSA publishes eB/L standards

In an effort to accelerate the digitalisation process of the maritime industry the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), has published booking standards for cargo and the issuing of bills of lading (B/L).

Standardisation of digital processes will allow different company systems to access the necessary data and the DCSA has designed its B/L standards so that they are aligned with the UN/CEFACT’s (United  Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business) multimodal transport...
