FMCSA details new truck driver detention time survey

WASHINGTON — A long-standing quest for better data on how delays experienced by truck drivers waiting to load and unload affects safety and lost pay will get a fresh start by federal regulators.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration released on Wednesday the parameters of a new data collection it hopes will close an information gap preventing regulators from fully understanding the effects of truck driver detention time.

“This research study will collect data on commercial motor vehicle...

Is your fleet data safe with FMCSA?

After the attempted hack of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) medical database just over three years ago, the agency has been working to build its digital defenses surrounding its databases. But, after the Office of Inspector General (IG) for the Department of Transportation completed an audit of the administration’s information technology, it seems there are still major security flaws in FMCSA’s data-banking systems.

On Oct. 20, IG released a report detailing its recent...

FMCSA wants missing driver exam results by Sept. 30

An estimated 14,000 medical examiners have less than two months to submit the results of truck driver physical qualification exams conducted during a nine-month database outage three years ago.

In a notice scheduled to be posted on Monday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stated that “upload functionality” into the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (MEs) was fully restored on Aug. 13, 2018. “FMCSA is aware that while many MEs have submitted results of examinations...

Chao probe fallout: Concerns remain over freight project money

Results of an investigation into potential conflicts of interest involving former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao have renewed concerns about the agency’s ability to oversee a fair process when selecting grant winners for major infrastructure projects.

A report on the investigation’s findings released this week by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) inspector general (IG) — at the request of U.S. House Democrats in 2019 — found no evidence that Chao used her office to steer...

FMCSA ‘struggling’ with under-21 CDL pilot for military vets

Lack of participation in a program meant to address a shortfall of drivers entering the trucking industry is forcing regulators to adjust.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be extending its Under 21 Military Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Pilot Program beyond the three-year period typically set by Congress for such projects, according to FMCSA Deputy Administrator Wiley Deck.

“We are struggling trying to get drivers into the program,” Deck acknowledged during a...

Owner-operators flag USMCA’s scrutiny of Mexican cross-border trucking

Provisions in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) meant to weed out unqualified trucking companies south of the border were highlighted today by small-business trucking companies as the trade pact goes into force.

“The USMCA creates a thorough review process to identify and remove Mexico-based carriers and operators that pose material economic harm to American truckers,” commented Todd Spencer, president of the Owner-Operator Independent Trucking Association (OOIDA). “This means...

DOT called out for gaps in truck safety, COVID-19 leadership

A new report from a government watchdog agency urges more action from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) on truck safety oversight and in responding to pandemics such as COVID-19.

The two issues are among 16 new or existing “open priority recommendations” published by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) on April 30. Such recommendations are those GAO considers needing the most attention from heads of key departments or agencies.

According to GAO, “they are highlighted...
