Exploring all options to keep decarbonization on course, mentions a DNV source.

IMO targets becoming more ambitious

With IMO targets becoming more ambitious, DNV’s latest Maritime Forecast to 2050 explores how shipping can reach its decarbonization goals. With an expected shortfall of carbon-neutral fuels, the maritime industry needs to explore all decarbonization options to achieve a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

“This is a decisive decade for...

No Evident Technology To Reach Carbon-neutral Targets in the Next 3 Years

  • No carbon-neutral technology in the next 3-5 years.
  • Hydrogen-based fuels are tout to be a promising alternative for shipping at the moment.
  • Hapag Lloyd CEO says there should be a greater focus on the 2030 targets.

At this point in time, there is no technology in sight that would make large, ocean-going ships carbon-neutral in the next three to five years, reports Offshore Enerhy quoting the CEO of German liner company Hapag-Lloyd, Rolf Habben Jansen.

Advantage of dual-fuel engines

VTT focuses on bio and waste-based oils for ships

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland along with several collaborators are exploring how fuel oils made from biomass and waste plastics can be suitable for power plants and ship diesel engines. Through their research, partners aim to determine the most ecologically and economically sustainable ways for fossil fuels’ replacement.

Our goal is to find the most ecologically and economically sustainable way to replace fossil heavy fuel oil in ship and power plant diesel engines.

KR awards AIP to HHI for its LNG dual-fuel carrier

The Korean Register recently granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its LNG dual fuel propulsion car carrier. In fact, the AIP covers two pure car and truck carriers vessels with a carrying capacity of 7.000 and 8.1000 CEU (car equivalent units).

As HHI informed, both vessels are equipped with the IMO type C tanks, meaning that are independent self-supporting LNG fuel tanks.

Type C tank uses pressure containment system which ensures safety and no risk of...
