Truck Tech: Power booster edition

Truck Tech logo on blue background

For decades, a 12-volt battery system was just fine for running accessories on a commercial truck. Then came auxiliary power units to help with nighttime idling. With the dawn of electric and autonomous trucks — and stricter pollution regulations — get ready for 48-volt battery systems.

to 48-volt systems

We write a lot in this space about electric trucks and the high-voltage power systems that power them. There’s a lot of other power needs under the hood of a Class 8 commercial...

Meritor buying Siemens electric propulsion business

Deep blue illustration of Siemens -imagine electric truck and bus

Even as its $3.7 billion merger with Cummins Inc. proceeds, Meritor Inc. said Friday it has agreed to purchase the Siemens Commercial Vehicles electric propulsion business. The move would bulk up its electrification portfolio.

The battle among players in commercial vehicle electrification is growing fierce. Tier 1 suppliers like BorgWarner Inc., Dana Inc., Eaton Corp. and Cummins are jockeying for market share in fully integrated systems to meet the expected growth in electric trucks.

“The...

Commentary: It’s not about the money. It’s what the money says.

Three ChargePoint direct current fast chargers

My favorite scene in the movie adaptation of Michael Lewis’ “Moneyball” occurred during 2003 in the darkened Oakland A’s locker room where Billy Beane, the team’s general manager, reluctantly slid a folded piece of paper across a table to his math genius assistant Peter Brand.

Unfolding the paper, Brand stared at the number written, telling Beane after a pause the offer from the Boston Red Sox would make Beane the highest-paid general manager in sports.

“So?” So what? Beane replies somewhat...

Paccar reveals 18-speed automated manual transmissions for Peterbilt, Kenworth

MARSHALL, Mich. — Paccar Inc.’s new 18-speed automated manual transmissions prove their worth long before approaching a 15-degree hill on Eaton Corp.’s snow-covered proving ground in mid-Michigan.

The TX-18 debuting this July in Peterbilt and Kenworth heavy-haul trucks for on- and off-highway uses doesn’t drive like the family SUV, but maneuverability hauling 140,000 pounds is not that far off a family hauler when it comes to steering feel, braking and a lot of smart assist features Paccar...

Get used to the name: Meritor’s 14Xe electric powertrain becoming ubiquitous

Meritor Inc., a supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, aftermarket and electric powertrains, announced a raft of deals Tuesday that will make the name of its 14Xe chassis hard to ignore as it spreads throughout trucks, buses and industrial applications.

It is a big deal because Meritor (NYSE: MTOR) competes with other suppliers, including Dana Inc., BorgWarner and Eaton Corp., in pursuing a conversion of significant portions of their business aimed at internal combustion engine-driven...

Truck Talk: Taking the high road edition

This week, Hyliion lets slide a slight; hydrogen fuel cells are everywhere, or it seems that way; and thermal imaging gets a look as a way to enhance autonomous trucking perception.

Yeah, he meant it

Like most conferences, in person or virtual, panel discussions prevailed at last week’s Advanced Clean Transportation Expo. One exchange that didn’t happen stood out.

Hyliion Holdings founder and CEO Thomas Healy was making his first of several appearances during the week, talking up his company’s...

BorgWarner plans 15X growth in electrification revenue by 2030

BorgWarner Inc. (NYSE:BWA) plans to grow its electric vehicle revenue from less than 3% to about 45% of its top line by 2030. The Tier 1 supplier will shed existing businesses worth up to $4 billion to get there.

The Michigan-based supplier last October completed a $3.3 billion acquisition of Delphi Technologies, once part of the world’s largest automotive supplier. In February, it announced an $880 million takeover of European battery maker AKASOL.

“Now is the time to move away from a balanced...

2-year-old Eaton recall blamed in Daimler Trucks clutch failures

Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) is recalling 8,267 heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. and Canada because of a clutch failure covered in a 2-year-old Eaton Corp. (NYSE: ETN) recall.

At the time, all major truck makers, including DTNA, Volvo Trucks North America and engine maker Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI), were named in a recall of 76,512 faulty Eaton clutch parts. Clutch failure can lead to unintended movement and a crash.

In September, DTNA received a report of unintended movement of a truck...
