Carriers follow through with capacity discipline and blank more sailings

Ocean carriers are continuing with their “cautious” approach to capacity management, announcing a new series of blanked sailings in October.
Both the 2M and THE alliances have withdrawn headhaul capacity in weeks 40 to 44 to mitigate expected reduced demand due to the Chinese Golden Week holiday, the first week of next month.
Alphaliner said that, notwithstanding that September “will be a strong month for the carriers”, their decision to avoid overcapacity …

Paying premium rates no guarantee of space for shippers to North Europe

Shippers from Asia to North Europe face a severe capacity crunch, and carriers are set to add to their misery with mid-month FAK rises and peak season surcharges.
NVOCCs have told The Loadstar in the past few days they were experiencing three-to-four-week delays for FAVs (first available vessels) to North Europe, and even longer for the UK.
“We are paying their FAK rates, and even a premium on top, but we are really struggling …

Transpac rates at new heights, but reviving blank sailings could muddy the water

Transpacific container spot rates to the US west coast have powered over the $3,000 mark to hit a record level of $3,167 per 40ft.
The US west coast component of today’s Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) soared 17% on the back of 1 August GRIs and is now 100% higher than a year ago.
The spot rate surge represents the highest SCFI reading for the west coast in the decade-long history of …

Asia-North Europe market share set to ebb and flow between the alliances

More evidence has emerged on how differently the three main container shipping alliances on the Asia-North Europe trade are to manage capacity for the remainder of the year.
According to new data from SeaIntelligence today, the 2M and Ocean alliances had been quick off the mark early in the year to make drastic capacity cuts in weeks five and six. The 2M partners reduced capacity by over 50%, compared with that …

Spike in Asia-Europe spot rates as space tightens and rollovers increase

There has been a significant spike in carrier short-term container rate quotes from Asia to North Europe this week, as rollovers become the norm.
According to eeSea data, ocean carriers on the route have withdrawn 28% of their headhaul sailings this month and reports from local agents suggest ships from China are sailing full, resulting in rollovers of non-VIP cargo.
Indeed, a local agent source told The Loadstar MSC had hiked its Shanghai …

Capacity control keeps ocean freight rates steady, but container rollovers increase

Ocean carriers are successfully underpinning freight rates through capacity discipline, with reports of container rollovers at Chinese export hubs and detention transhipment ports.
Flexport head of ocean freight (EMEA) Martin Holst-Mikkelsen told The Loadstar: “There is a high utilisation, and services on the [Asia-Europe] trade are relatively full for the coming two weeks.
“We are also seeing some increase in container rollovers at ports in China as well as at transhipment hubs,” …

Container spot rates from Asia holding steady, despite carrier shortcomings

Ocean carriers are succeeding in propping up container spot rates from Asia, partly due to poorly communicated blanking programmes creating uncertainty for shippers.
Several have complained to The Loadstar that they receive late, confusing and often conflicting advice from carriers on blank sailings – even from container lines in the same alliance.
Moreover, shippers are finding that, where bookings are being rolled onto other loops, those services are not necessarily discharging their …

Blank sailings tally on major tradelanes for next month tops 300 – so far

Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on consumers, particularly in Europe and the US, has resulted in a dramatic slump in demand for container space and forced ocean carriers to blank hundreds of sailings.
According to the latest data from Copenhagen-based maritime and supply chain intelligence company eeSea, carriers have so far cancelled 302 headhaul voyages in May across the major tradelanes – 11% of the 2,693 proforma sailings.
That number is likely to increase …

HMM launches world’s biggest box ship – but its first voyage may be the last

As South Korean shipping line HMM today formally launched the world’s largest containership, the country’s government outlined an enormous financial package to prop up its maritime industries.
According to a report in The South Korea Herald, the ministry for oceans and fisheries has set aside SKw1.25trn (US$1bn) to help shipping lines, shipyards and other maritime players.

Asia-Europe carriers cut FAK prices as capacity cuts prop up spot rates

Asia-Europe ocean carriers are reducing FAK rates for May as forward booking prospects deteriorate with the collapse in demand.
CMA CGM has dropped its 40ft high-cube FAK rate for North Europe from $2,550 to $1,750 from 1 May, with other carriers on the route offering similar discounts.
Hapag-Lloyd, for example has set its 40ft high-cube FAK rate at $1,890 from the same date.
For the more robust Asia to West Mediterranean tradelane, the …
