Ransomware attack hits Orbcomm’s BT series of ELDs; paper logs are back

Orbcomm, a major provider of ELDs to the trucking sector, is dealing with a ransomware attack that has limited the ability of its customers to use its Fleet Manager offering, which includes its Blue Tree ELD systems, the company has confirmed.

Resolving the issue may take up to two weeks.

“On September 6, 2023, ORBCOMM experienced a ransomware attack that is temporarily impacting our FleetManager platform and BT product line, which is used by some of our customers to track and monitor their...

Axle aims to empower trucking companies using big data

While digital highways are connecting more and more of the global supply chain — including linking every tractor-trailer in the U.S. to the internet — the founders of Axle said most trucking companies and logistics operators are still missing out on a wealth of data.

“We noticed that transportation and trucking companies, everyone from carriers, broker, shippers, they just weren’t getting the full value of technology that was available,” Dhruv Gupta, co-founder and CEO of Axle, told...

Trucking Alliance, same 9 members, continues to chart its own path on regulation

In the sweep of trucking-related trade groups, there is really nothing quite like The Trucking Alliance.

It started with nine members more than 10 years ago; it has the same nine members and isn’t taking applications for new ones. (However, it will be losing one, U.S. Xpress, when it is acquired by Knight-Swift. But Knight-Swift is a member too, so it could be argued the organization isn’t shrinking.)

Whereas most trade groups actively seek to bring in new members, the Alliance does no such...

FMCA revokes electronic logging device from ArionTech

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued an alert Friday informing the trucking industry that an electronic logging device is no longer approved for truck drivers and motor carriers to use.

The ArionT ELD was placed on the FMCSA’s revoked devices list for failure to meet minimum requirements pertaining to hours-of-service limits, according to a news release. It appears to be the first device the agency has invalidated, joining a list of about 50 ELDs that have been “self-revoked.”

Enforcement of Canada ELD mandate delayed until 2023

An ELD seen inside a truck illustrating an article about Canada's ELD mandate.

Canada’s transportation regulators have agreed to delay enforcement of the federal ELD mandate by an additional six months, until Jan. 1, 2023.

The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) announced the delay on Monday, saying regulators and the trucking industry need more time.

“Jurisdictions have been monitoring progress and determined that an extension of the transition period is required,” said the CCMTA, which coordinates transportation policy and enforcement among Canada’s...
