Voltera helps fleets overcome biggest roadblock to electrification

The adoption of electric vehicles has grown at a rapid pace over the last decade, and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down anytime soon.

In the U.S., there are now some 3 million electric vehicles on the road and 135,000 public EV chargers, according to a White House briefing. Over the next decade, it’s expected consumer demand will continue to be fueled by environmental concerns, more vehicle choices, stronger battery capacity and cost savings.

The transportation industry is the lead emitter...

WattEV opens public truck charging depot in Long Beach port

Nikola Tre models and WattEV chargers

Megawatt charging depots so far are behind-the-fence operations exclusive to the fleets that operate them. Truck-as-a-Service (TaaS) startup WattEV changes that when it opens its first charging-for-all installation at the Port of Long Beach.

“A lot of competitors have been talking about infrastructure, but we actually have equipment in the ground,” Salim Youssefzadeh, WattEV founder and CEO, told FreightWaves ahead of opening its first public changing depot Monday at the Port of Long Beach.

“We...

Truck Tech: Daum straight edition

Martin Daum rarely equivocates. The CEO of Daimler Truck sets courses the trucking industry often follows. If you ask him a question, expect a straight answer. We did. And so did he.

When Martin Daum talks …

Martin Daum is one of those people for whom a paraphrase of the famous line from the 1970s TV commercials by investment bank EF Hutton applies. When the CEO of Daimler Truck talks, the global trucking industry listens.

Congress approves incentive boost for EV truck purchases

Walmart electric delivery truck

Congress on Friday passed climate legislation with tax incentives aimed at speeding adoption of medium and heavy-duty trucks, particularly those serving the last-mile delivery sector.

The U.S. House voted along party lines, 220-207, to approve the Democrat-backed Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA), a $745 billion package that contains grants and incentives to reduce the cost of clean energy and healthcare, along with tax reforms.

The IRA, a pared down version of President Joe Biden’s “Build...

Pilot and GM plan coast-to-coast EV fast-charging network

White GMC Hummer in front of Pilot truck stop

Pilot Co. will install 2,000 electric fast chargers at 500 of its U.S. truck stops over the next few years, creating a coast-to-coast network in partnership with General Motors.

Startup EVgo (NASDAQ: EVGO) will install, operate and maintain the chargers. The chargers are branded as part of GM’s Ultium Charge 360 network. Chargers will begin appearing at U.S. Pilot and Flying J service plazas in early 2023. The majority of the 500 installations will be in place by 2025, Cathy Zoi, EVgo CEO, said...

Commentary: It’s not about the money. It’s what the money says.

Three ChargePoint direct current fast chargers

My favorite scene in the movie adaptation of Michael Lewis’ “Moneyball” occurred during 2003 in the darkened Oakland A’s locker room where Billy Beane, the team’s general manager, reluctantly slid a folded piece of paper across a table to his math genius assistant Peter Brand.

Unfolding the paper, Brand stared at the number written, telling Beane after a pause the offer from the Boston Red Sox would make Beane the highest-paid general manager in sports.

“So?” So what? Beane replies somewhat...
