DNV GL’s Energy Outlook Predicts Deep Decarbonization 15 Years Away

DNV GL’s Energy Transition Outlook 2020 provides an independent forecast of developments in the world energy mix to 2050.
Deep decarbonization of the world’s energy system is still 15 years away, with carbon emissions set to remain stubbornly high until the mid-2030s.
Carbon dioxide emissions from energy use will fall just 15% to 2035, before then dropping 40% to 2050.
The oil and gas industry will account for over 80% of world energy-related carbon emissions in 2050.

COVID-19 Pandemic To Impact World’s Energy Transition

COVID-19 will have a dramatic impact on short-term energy supply and demand.
World GDP will shrink 6% in 2020 with lingering effects of the pandemic.
The pandemic will reduce energy demand through to 2050 by 8%.
This will result in energy demand in 2050 at almost exactly the level it was in 2018.
Demand for manufactured goods globally will need almost four years to recover to 2019 levels.
