In trucking, where uptime can be the difference between making or losing money, major truck manufacturers are rolling out digital tools to speed parts ordering, using an app to audibly guide repairs and even arranging to transport trucks needing service.

The one-day repair is a focus of all manufacturers who also are increasingly using over-the-air updates to reprogram sophisticated computer systems without the truck coming to a service center.

New trailer orders fell to near zero in April

Preliminary net orders for trailers in April fell to just 300 bookings, the lowest level since 1990.

The 95% drop in orders from March and 98% decline from April 2019 put orders during the past 12 months at 162,000, according to FTR Transportation Intelligence.

The impact of the health crisis on manufacturing and an already slowing market for equipment combined to cause many fleets to effectively close their order books and cancel or push out orders scheduled for 2020 delivery.

Wabash National maintains solid trailer order backlog

Wabash National Corp. (NYSE: WNC) maintains a $1 billion backlog of commercial trailers and other equipment to build and is seeing steady customer orders despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Depressed used truck prices fall lower in April

Prices for Class 8 used trucks continued to fall in April, though some improvement in auction activity gave hope the bottom of the market is near.

Same-dealer sales were off 8% in April compared to March as the first full month of the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the overall economy. Volumes fell 5% compared to the same month a year ago, according to ACT Research.

Month-over-month used truck prices fell 8%, ACT said.

Global automotive parts supplier Continental is collaborating with fleet management solution provider KeepTruckin to switch the electronic logging devices (ELDs) used by its customer base to KeepTruckin’s ELD solutions.

WACT to be enhanced with new equipment

The West African Container Terminal (WACT), Onne Port, Rivers State, has ordered 10 terminal trucks, two reach stackers and one empty container handler worth $2.5 million (about N900 million) to cope with increasing volumes at the terminal.

European firms to equip Chabahar port
