DCSA and ESC cooperate for the adoption of DCSA standards

There is a growing need for closer collaboration between cargo owners and ocean carriers to improve cargo visibility and data communication, which has also been shown by supply chain issues.

In light of the above, the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), a neutral, not-for-profit group established to further standardise the digitalisation of container shipping, and the European Shippers’ Council (ESC), representing cargo owners, are proceeding to joint collaboration to accelerate the...

Shippers And forwarders Mull Legal Bid Against Increasing rates

The European Commission has said it does not regard the huge container spot rate increases between Asia and Europe as sufficient justification to investigate carriers for an infringement of the Block Exemption Regulation (BER) for consortia, says an article published in the loadstar.

What is happening

The European Shippers’ Council (ESC) and European freight forwarder association CLECAT had presented the EC with data relating to the increase in blank sailings, a decrease in reliability “and...

Maritime Trade Hit By Carriers Breaching Contracts, Charging Higher Rates

As Asia-Europe container spot rates continue to skyrocket, shippers and freight forwarders are accusing carriers of breaching short- and long-term contracts to “charge whatever they want”, reports the LoadStar.

ESC slams “immoral” lines

European shippers believe that the shipping lines’ reaction to the slump in demand as a result of the pandemic has been understandable, initially, but as the crisis developed the lines shifted from coping with under-utilised ships to profiteering.

Jordi Espin, the European Shippers’ Council policy manager for maritime affairs, told Container News, that shippers are concerned about the level of capacity cuts and the lack of service.

“It is not a strange situation,” explained Espin, “Three years...

Shippers say service is worse, but the costs are higher

Unhappy shippers say that they are unclear what to expect from shipping lines since the Coronavirus pandemic hit the global economy as services are cancelled without consultation or understanding of the situation for shippers.

Carriers are continuing to cut services with approximately 20% of capacity on the main east/west trades having been cancelled in the third quarter, even as demand is said to be returning in some markets.

Beneficial cargo owners (BCO) are, however, unaware of when...

ESC sends strong message to EC over alliances’ Block Exemption

European shippers and other transport bodies have written to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen to express their “strong disapproval” of the commission’s recent decision to extend the liner consortia block exemption for four more years.

But they say that they will not make any fresh attempt to overturn the decision, concentrating on ensuring that the commission does not extend the exemption another four years when the current extension expires on 25 April 2024.

In their letter,...

EC renews Liner Block Exemption

The European Commission has decided to proceed with its planned renewal of the liner shipping consortia block exemption despite vociferous protests from shippers and other supply chain interests.

The exemption, which allows shipping companies to override European Union competition law in order to cooperate in the provision of joint liner services, had been due to expire next month but has now been extended until 25 April 2024.

In its announcement, the commission made no reference to the protests...
