AFAI launches 50th Incat Crowther built for China

SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 — Recently launched by China’s AFAI Southern shipyard for Zuhai High Speed Ferry Company, the 40 m catamaran passenger ferry Xin Hai Bin is the 50th Incat Crowther designed vessel built for operation in China.

Incat Crowther’s relationship with AFAI dates back to 1982, when the yard built the first Incat Crowther ferries to enter service in China.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2018 — Hong Kong’s Wang Tak Engineering and Shipbuilding Company has launched the 40 m catamaran passenger ferry Jiang Men.

Operated by Chu Kong Shipping Enterprises, the vessel is the third in a series of Incat Crowther designed ferries that started with the Shi Zi Yang 7, delivered in 2016. In China’s competitive Pearl River Delta marketplace, Incat Crowther has continued to improve the design, realizing an 8% improvement in fuel burn.

IMO Sec-Gen expresses sadness over Nyerere casualty

IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has expressed his great sadness over the recent casualty of the Nyerere, the domestic ferry which capsized on Lake Victoria, Tanzania, killing 224.

Boatie who collided with ferry ordered to community service

An Auckland recreational boatie, Grant Reginald McCutcheon, has been ordered to complete 120 hours community service after his boat collided with a Fullers Group ferry on the Waitemata Harbour.

Maritime NZ charged Mr. McCutcheon with acting dangerously by not keeping a proper look-out. Mr McCutcheon pleaded guilty.

Judge Singh said a fine of $4,300, would have been appropriate. However, Judge Singh then acknowledged Mr McCutcheon is an undischarged bankrupt and would be unable to pay a fine.

Death toll from capsized vessel off Tanzania reaches 224

Death toll from the Tanzanian ferry ‘MV Nyerere’ has reached 224, after the vessel capsized in Lake Victoria on Thursday, Tanzanian authorities informed, while the ship’s managers have been detained for questioning.

The ferry sank on Thursday evening just a few metres from the dock on Ukerewe, the lake’s biggest island. The official cause of the accident is yet to be determined, however the vessel was believed to carry more people than permitted, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, BBC reported...
