Adapting to the future of final mile

It’s not uncommon for living rooms to double as an entertainment space and office these days. As the pandemic continues to keep many Americans at home, their willingness to shop online for large and bulky items, products that typically wouldn’t fit into traditional courier distribution networks like exercise equipment, has emerged as a significant shopping trend. In short, the shop-from-home method is looking to be the norm for a growing number of bigger products.

Of all the tough parts of the supply chain, getting products into a person’s home is the most challenging.

This is an excerpt from Friday’s (5/7) Point of Sale retail supply chain newsletter sponsored by ArcBest.

What happened? More than two weeks after declining the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s request to recall its treadmills, Peloton announced Wednesday the company is voluntarily recalling all its Tread and Tread+ units in the U.S. The announcement marked a major reversal of Peloton’s initial reaction and comes after more than 38 reports of injuries involving Tread+ machines, including one...

More long-haul drivers eyeing final mile

While the country shut down for the pandemic, the trucking industry shined. The current market was the light at the end of the tunnel: high volume, high rates and increased compensation for drivers.

The stars have seemed to align for the average long-haul driver, but ironically, trucking companies are having difficulty locking down new drivers.

In a recent Randall-Reilly study, truck driver job postings in 2020 rose by more than 300,000, but job seekers rose by only 70,000.

In the report, 33% of...

Why LTL is perfectly positioned to take e-commerce market share

This is an excerpt from Monday’s (3/22) Point of Sale retail supply chain newsletter sponsored by ArcBest.

The consumer spending boon, driven by government stimulus, is driving elevated demand for every mode of freight from ocean to air. Less-than-truckload is no exception. Not only are LTL providers seeing a surge in demand from Americans now ordering anything and everything online, but because of the imbalance between truckload supply and demand, nontraditional TL freight is spilling over into...

Can cardboard be eliminated from e-commerce?

This is an excerpt from Thursday’s (2/18) Point of Sale retail supply chain newsletter sponsored by ArcBest.

Is it crazy that after 25 years of e-commerce, there has been very little innovation when it comes to packaging? Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) has led the way toward establishing more sustainable packaging standards with its Frustration-Free Packaging initiative. Since 2015, the initiative has reduced the weight of outbound packaging by 33% and eliminated more than 900,000 tons of packaging...

Skill makes all the difference in final-mile space

Consumers have long been enamored with the idea of bringing luxury amenities – from home gyms to movie theaters – into their own homes. A convenience once reserved for the wealthy, more and more middle-class families have decided to bring the gym to them over the last few decades.

Demand for in-home workout equipment was heating up fast before COVID spread across the country last spring. It comes as no surprise that the closed gyms and stay-at-home orders that accompanied the pandemic led to...
