Bay Shipbuilding to build Great Lakes bulk carrier

A U.S.-flagged Great Lakes bulk carrier will be built for the first time in more than 35 years. The Interlake Steamship Company recently awarded a contract to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding to build a new River-class, self-unloading bulk carrier.

It is believed to be the first ship for U.S. Great Lakes service built on the Great Lakes since 1983. The ship will transport raw materials to support manufacturing throughout the Great Lakes region.

Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding finishes barge conversion

Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding has delivered the converted ATB barge Commander to Port City Marine Services (PCMS), Muskegon, Mich.

The Commander is a 495’x72’ freight barge that underwent extensive conversion, including the installation of new cargo holds, trunk deck and bow, and a new cargo unloading system.

Port City Marine is experienced in the management, conversion and operation of a variety of vessels including bulk freight ships and ATBs across the Great Lakes.

Recruiting, retaining workers remains difficult, IWBS speakers say

Attracting people into the shipbuilding industry remains a major concern for many yards. Ken Hocke photo

The ever-perplexing problem of filling shipyards with dependable workers was on the minds of several speakers during the International WorkBoat Show’s Shipyard Program last week in New Orleans.

Some shipyards have trouble attracting young people and keeping them in the industry. Shipyards are usually not seen as a “cool” place to work. It’s frustrating when you do recruit a worker, spend the money to train him or her, then have that person move on to another yard or another industry.

WorkBoat names its Significant Boats of 2018

WorkBoat has named its 10 Significant Boats of 2018. This year’s list included four passenger vessels, two of them ferries. Other selections: two ATBs, a tug, water taxi, towboat, fire-rescue boat and an LNG bunker barge.
