A chill settles over perishables shippers as reefer shortage persists

Concerns over a shortage of reefer containers are still riding high, amid fresh warnings that supply is due fall well short of demand towards the end of the year, and into 2020.
The warning came from global head of seafreight reefer logistics at Kuehne + Nagel Frank Ganse, while Thomas Eskesen, founder of Eskesen Advisory, also envisages no improvement next year.
He pointed to the fact that orders for new reefer containers currently …

Opposition to EU-Mercosur trade deal sees logistics plans stay on drawing boards

The European Union and the Mercosur trade pact have come a long way: after 20 years of talks, the two sides have finally agreed to phase out tariffs on most goods over the next 10 years.
The trade agreement was announced on June 28, the culmination of negotiations that stretched back as far as the days of the dot-com boom.
It opens the door for many exporters on both sides of the …

US business leaders hit back on trade tariffs and tell Trump ‘enough is enough’

A vast array of major US businesses, and associations, as well as some major Trump appointees, have written to the president under the banner of “Tariffs Hurt the Heartland”.
They include Robert Lighthizer, Steven Mnuchin, Wilbur Ross, agriculture secretary Sonny Perdue and Larry Kudlow of the National Economic Council, and warn that two million American jobs could be lost if the tariff war continues.

Chinese exporters bid to dodge tariffs with fake Made-in-Vietnam labels

It will surprise no one, but Chinese exporters are resorting to fake product-origin certificates and illegal transfers in a bid to avoid US tariffs on their goods. Vietnam has found false certificates on a range of products, from agriculture to textiles and steel, according to Bloomberg. The country has promised to increase penalties for trade-related fraud, which includes re-routing goods through other countries. And Vietnam fears it too could come …

In Trump’s trade war with China, west coast ports are ‘gummed up’

Tariffs, and the uncertainty surrounding them, are causing havoc at US ports. The Los Angeles Times reports that shippers are facing huge traffic jams and containers are piled up on the dockside, incurring thousands of dollars in port fees, while distribution centres are overflowing. But still, shippers are bringing in more inventory, worried about the threat of new tariffs. Los Angeles and Long Beach have been badly affected and are “gummed up”, according to …

Carriers getting increasingly nervous as protectionist policies gain ground

Ocean carriers are getting increasingly nervous over trade tensions and state–subsidised competitors, as protectionist policies continue to gain ground across the globe.
Several shipping bodies, including the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA) and European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) took to the floor of the WTO this week to express their concerns.
They presented two papers to the WTO, stating they were “fully committed to the...

US business fury at ‘catastrophic’ higher trade tariffs on Chinese imports

And so it has come to pass: the US has hiked tariffs on $200bn-worth of imported goods from China – and China has vowed to retaliate.
Tariffs have now gone up from 10% to 25% on a wide range of goods, set to impact the perishables, chemicals, construction, industrial, electronics, transport and FMCG industries and, for the first time, a wide range of textiles, among other things.
While today was always the deadline, negotiations between …

US automotive tariffs would have a serious impact on global supply chains

As carriers to struggle with overcapacity, the impact of potential US automotive tariffs is only likely to worsen the situation, with the country’s ports also set to suffer.
This was the finding of shipping consultant Drewry, which assessed three potential tariff scenarios being considered by the US administration.
Senior analyst for ports and terminals Neil Davidson said the findings were based on the assumption that tariffs are set in May.
“We’d then expect …

Global trade still growing and flowing – but is becoming more regionalised

Supply chains are becoming increasingly regionalised, particularly in Asia and Europe, while trade intensity is in decline, according to new research on globalisation published today.
While trade is still growing in absolute terms, cross-border goods have declined from 28.1% of the total share in 2007 to 22.5% in 2017, and volume growth has slowed from 2.1 times faster than GDP to 1.1, according to McKinsey’s Globalisation in Transition: the future of …
