Late-season blizzard heading to Rockies and Plains

Tractor-trailer in heavy snow.

A late-season blizzard could severely slow down or even shut down transportation, supply chains and freight flows this week from the Rockies to south-central Canada.

The same storm that dumped heavy snow in high elevations of the Northwest over the weekend will become stronger as it moves farther inland. Warnings remain posted for icy winter storm

A winter storm that began Wednesday has been spreading sleet and freezing rain from Texas to the mid-South and Ohio Valley. These regions remain at risk for additional accumulations Thursday.

The combination of ice and heaping sleet led to accidents, road closures and power outages in Arkansas. More than 31,000 customers, mostly to the northeast of Little Rock, still had no electricity as of early Thursday morning.

I strongly advise against travel on Highway 67 north of Little Rock, AR. Heavy...

Eastern US braces for strong weekend winter storm

Transportation crews in the South have been deploying their brine trucks to get ready for an approaching winter storm. Spraying brine before a winter storm begins can prevent snow and rain from freezing on the roads or at least reduce the amount of time it takes for the freezing to occur.

Tractor-trailers in rain and snow.

A La Nina climate pattern is emerging for the second consecutive winter in the U.S., according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center (CPC).

For carriers, this means their drivers may have to deal with a high number of delays in the Northwest and Great Lakes. Impacts would spread to shippers and customers.
