Daimler Truck marries electric and autonomous technologies

Daimler Truck added autonomous driving technology to its Class 8 electric eCascadia, creating a demo that addresses future markets for driverless trucks and emission realities that will eventually push out diesel fuel.

“We asked ourselves, ‘What would it look like if we combined the freight efficiency potential of an autonomous truck with the promise of zero emissions and decarbonization of our series production electric vehicle?’” Joanna Buttler, head of the Daimler Truck Global Autonomous...

Freightliner eM2 completes Daimler Truck EV commercial vehicle lineup

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A year after starting regular production of its Class 8 Freightliner eCascadia battery-electric truck, Daimler Truck North America will build the eM2 medium-duty model this fall. It plans for utility bucket trucks and other vocational applications after starting with straight trucks.

The launch of the Class 6 eM2 was delayed by supply chain disruptions. But DTNA applied much of what it learned from the second-generation eCascadia daycab. That sometimes meant operating from 5...

Daimler built excess electric truck capacity in ‘22

LAS VEGAS — Daimler Truck North America created capacity to build 2,000 Class 8 battery-electric trucks last year. But sales fell far short because of a lack of charging infrastructure.

“We had in our mind the market demand was going to be X based on discussions with customers,” CEO John O’Leary told reporters in a roundtable Tuesday before the opening of the Manifest supply chain conference.

“We installed the capacity and then, all of a sudden, [it was] ‘Whoa, wait a minute. I know I told you I...

Truck Tech: Plant anatomy edition

Logo of Truck Tech newsletter

How did Navistar manage to build its assembly plant in San Antonio for a relatively paltry $250 million? Partly by ignoring a famous baseball movie line. Also this week, Daimler Truck North America preps technicians to work on electric trucks. And every step van on the market could be electrified — today, a North American Council for Freight Efficiency report says.

A world of plants

Mark Hernandez sounds like the no-nonsense manufacturing expert he is. Straight out of central casting.

Truck Tech: California electric dreams edition

California does its bit for small fleets looking to electrify; Amazon Web Services makes cloud storage for automotive autonomy a thing; and Peterbilt takes immersive reality to the service bay. And yes, we have changed our name.

Beginning this week, Truck Talk is now Truck Tech, a title that better describes the newsletter’s content. We still offer perspective, context and commentary on the trucking ecosystem and its evolution through autonomous, connectivity and electrification technologies.

The first five Navistar International medium-duty battery-electric trucks (BETs) will go to Penske Truck Leasing, a customer with a track record of early adoption of new technology, Navistar said Monday.

Penske received 20 Class 8 Freightliner eCascadias Class 8 and Class 6 eM2 BETs in 2019. It has used them on local and regional deliveries in Southern California, contributing to Daimler Trucks North America’s recent milestone of 1 million real-world miles of electric driving.
