Power-to-Fuel project to convert CO2 into carbon neutral fuel

A consortium led by Swedish Carbon Energy Company Liquid Wind will work on the Power-to-Fuel project, eyeing production of liquid, carbon neutral fuel from captured carbon dioxide (CCU) and green hydrogen (from renewable electricity).

As such, the consortium, consisting of Axpo, COWI, Carbon Clean Solutions, Haldor Topsoe, Nel Hydrogen and Siemens, will combine their expertise and technology to establish commercial-scale renewable fuel facilities.

The project is supported by a 1.7M Euro...

Watch: Stena Bulk tests biofuel on MR tanker

During the coming weeks Stena Bulk will perform a test running on an MR tanker on 100% biofuel. The fuel is the MR1-100 bio-fuel oil, produced from used cooking oil and supplied by GoodFuels in Rotterdam.

The fuel has been bunkered onto the Stena Immortal and will be used to power the main engine in normal operations to test and prove the technical and operational feasibility.

By doing this test we want to contribute to push the industry and pave way towards more sustainable shipping. We want to...

Wärtsilä conducts first combustion trials for ammonia as a fuel

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has initiated combustion trials using ammonia, to help prepare for the use of ammonia as a fuel that can contribute to reducing both the shipping’s and energy sectors’ greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the tests, ammonia was injected into a combustion research unit to better understand its properties.

Based on initial results, the tests will continue on both dual-fuel and spark-ignited gas engines.

Then, field tests will follow in collaboration with ship owners...

Green Maritime Methanol successfully starts engine running on methanol

Within the Green Maritime Methanol project a new milestone has been achieved, with the successful start of the engine test programme on 100% methanol. New tests are being planned and two important new partners have joined the consortium recently.

In January 2020 Pon Power started its engine testing programme with a Caterpillar 3508 spark ignited high speed gas engine. The engine operated on 100% methanol as a fuel.

The tests were performed successfully and the test setup enables the researchers...

Rystad: Largest oil supply surplus to hit in April

The largest oil supply surplus the world has ever seen in a single quarter is about to hit the global market from April, creating an imbalance of around 10 million barrels per day (bpd), according to analysis by energy research firm Rystad Energy. The analysis also shows global storage infrastructure is in trouble and will be unable to take more crude and products in just a few months.

Rystad liquid balances show supply surpassing oil demand by an average of nearly 6 million bpd in 2020,...

Oil market can achieve up to 3m barrels per day from April

Rystad Energy estimated that the extra oil coming into the global market from April will be as much as 3 million barrels per day (bpd), while OPEC+ countries are able to add next month 2 million bpd, according to their storage, spare capacity and ramp up capabilities.

Specifically, prior to the OPEC+ meeting, Rystad Energy had calculated the cuts of approximately 2 million bpd in order for the market to balance.

Yet, since then, the imbalance that existed has been expanded given the global demand...

Infographic: The fuels of the future

IMO has developed an ambitious target to achieve a minimum of 50% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. However, to keep in line with this target, shipping industry must trust alternative fuels, that will lead it into the decarbonized future.

Today, according to Bureau Veritas, shipowners have alternative fuel options to help them meet IMO’s ambitions, each with its own advantages and challenges.

LNG/LPG

One of these fuels is LNG. As Dr. John Kokarakis, Vice President Technology &...

2020 Fuels: The New Normal

During the last GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Bill Stamatopoulos, Business Development Manager South Europe, VeriFuel, attempted to bust some of the myths regarding the sulphur cap that existed before 2020 sulphur cap applied.

Before the implementation of IMO Sulphur Cap, there were two famous myth busters: firstly that cat fines will be a big problem for the VLSFOs and secondly that the 2018 fuel incidents related to HSFOs from Houston were a pre-warning for VLSFOs issues. The truth is that we...

UAE bans MSC container ship over violation of fuel carriage ban

The UAE has banned the Panamanian-flagged container ship MSC Joanna from operating in its waters and ports for one year over violation of the recently implemented fuel carriage ban.

International sources citing the UAE’s Federal Transport Authority (FTA) say the ship was carrying more than 700 MT of high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) when boarded at Jebel Ali Port, although there had been warnings to the ship to offload the non-compliant fuel before calling UAE.

As a result, the ship’s Captain was...
