Risks Of Carrying A Fumigated Cargo

Fumigation is done to target infestations in bulk cargoes like grain and timber. The most widely used fumigant is aluminium phosphide which produces phosphine gas that is poisonous to humans. There have been numerous fatalities onboard ships as a result of the crew having been exposed to the gas, says in article published on gard website.

Standard Club Issues Overview of Cargo Fumigation Landscape

Following the pandemic and its travel bans, fumigators are unable to sail with the vessel. Therefore, ship operators and crew, who do not have the necessary expertise to handle toxic materials, are exposed to a risky operational environment.

In this context, Standard Club has issued guidelines for topping-up of fumigant by crew during the voyage.

Crew fumigation

Standard Club is witnessing an increasing number of cases where ships that are typically engaged in carriage of logs are being asked to...

Fumigation Operations To Be Strictly Monitored By Fumigator-in-Charge

  • Fumigants are the preferred choice in avoiding insect population when transporting agricultural products in bulk by sea.
  • However, fumigants are often at least as poisonous to humans as to the pests against which they are used.
  • And it is of crucial importance that fumigation operations are placed in the hands of qualified operators.

A recently published article in Skuld written by Martin Øhre deals with the fumigants that continue to cause  to and take lives of seafarers. By this brief article,...

Risks related to in-transit cargo fumigation

The Bahamas Maritime Authority highlight the risks associated with in-transit cargo fumigation. The authority’s recommendations are based on the initial findings of an ongoing investigation into a very serious marine casualty.

More specifically, a Bahamas registered general cargo vessel was chartered to carry a cargo of corn on a short haul voyage in Europe.

Upon completion of loading, the cargo was fumigated with Aluminium Phosphide at a dose of 1g/m³.

During the voyage, the vessel experienced...

Not a Vessel Fire! Is it Fumigation?

  • White smoke pouring off the ship was visible from the Lions Gate Bridge and the shoreline.
  • The billowing plumes were the result of a hatch blowing open, resulting in the hold’s contents venting in a process called – fumigation.

A large white plume was visible pouring from a large cargo ship in Vancouver’s harbour late Tuesday afternoon after a hatch blew open, reports CBC News.

Lessons learned: Improper distribution of fumigation pellets leads to explosions

As the Swedish Club informs, a bulk carrier had loaded yellow corn in all cargo holds up to the hatch coamings. After the loading, fumigation technicians fumigated the cargo with fumitoxin pellets. A couple of hours later an explosion took place in one of the holds.
