‘Just-in-time shipping is the smart thing to do’

At the first meeting three years ago of the Global Industry Alliance (GIA), a partnership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and 14 companies dedicated to decarbonizing shipping, shipowners complained about their vessels waiting days to weeks at anchorage before being able to call at port.

So said Astrid Dispert, the technical manager of GreenVoyage2050, a joint project of the IMO and the Norwegian government to steer the shipping industry toward a lower-carbon future, during a...

GIA meets to discuss uptake of alternative fuels

As part of IMO’s strategy to reduce GHG emissions from ships, a meeting of the IMO Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (GIA) Task Force took place at IMO Headquarters in London, on 27 November, holding a lively debate on the marine fuel for the future.

The task force namely discussed how the GIA can support IMO in the development of measures that can increase the uptake of low carbon fuels, with a view to feeding this into IMO’s work on the Initial GHG Strategy. As a next...

GloMEEP emphasizes on fuel consumption data collection

The GloMEEP project, led by IMO, delivered a training course to help maritime administrations and classification societies in collecting fuel consumption data from ships. The training took place in China, on 14 of November.

Fuel consumption data from ships provide crucial information to support IMO’s  efforts to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping.

Namely, from 1 January 2019 ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above will have to collect consumption data for each type of fuel oil they...

IMO’s toolkits to reduce emissions

To reduce emissions across the maritime sector, national authorities need to first quantify those emissions and then develop a strategy to reduce them. A new set of toolkits to assess and address emissions from ships and ports is now available from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the global regulatory body for shipping.

The Ship Emissions Toolkit and Port Emissions Toolkit have been developed under the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) Project,...

IMO issues ship and port emissions toolkits

IMO has developed a new set of toolkits to assess and address emissions from ships and ports. The Ship Emissions Toolkit and Port Emissions Toolkit have been developed under the GEF-UNDP-IMO Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) Project, in collaboration with its strategic partners, IMarEST and IAPH.

Astrid Dispert, GloMEEP Technical Adviser, said the guides would help support countries seeking to develop and strengthen national policy and regulatory frameworks related to the...

Watch: How ‘Just-in-Time’ concept can reduce ship emissions

The video explains the concept of ‘Just-In-Time’ arrival, developed by the IMO GloMEEP Global Industry Alliance to support low carbon shipping. Implementing “Just-In-Time” ship operations means ships receive information in advance so they can time their arrival at the berth.

Reducing the amount of time ships spend waiting outside port and at anchor could significantly reduce ship emissions, according to studies carried out by GIA members. Ships can spend hours or days waiting at anchor outside...
