Golden Ray wreckage continues leaking oil off Georgia coast

Cleanup crews are still working around the clock to stop oil leaking from the Golden Ray, a roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel that capsized off the coast of Georgia nearly two years ago.

The leak began about a week ago after workers dismantled a section of the Golden Ray. The tide swept oil spilling from the wreckage under an environmental protection barrier that was set up around the half-submerged ship.

Michael Himes, a spokesman for St. Simons Sound Incident Unified Command, said oil was still...

Vessel total losses still low, but …

There’s good news and bad news in the latest annual Safety & Shipping Review from insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS). The good news is that international shipping industry continued its long-term positive safety trend over the past year, with the number of large vessels lost remaining at record low levels in 2020, with reported incidents declining year-on-year.

The not-so-good news? Despite the low level of losses, “it is not all smooth sailing,” says Capt. Rahul Khanna,...

A significant amount of oil had escaped a barrier while crews had been busy dismantling an overturned cargo ship along the Georgia coast.

Michael Himes, Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class, said that it was difficult to estimate the amount of oil leaked. It had impacted the marsh grass present along the shoreline.

Crews observed the leak first around 8 in the morning while cutting a fifth section of the Golden Ray that had capsized in 2019 (September) with more than 4,000 automobiles in cargo...

Golden Ray wreckage removal operation a go again

The cutting apart of the Golden Ray has resumed — again.

The dismantling of the capsized roll-on/roll-off vessel has been hindered by several work stoppages, the most recent being a fire that erupted inside the wreck May 14.

The Golden Ray has been on its side in St. Simons Sound since the ship ran aground and capsized after departing the Port of Brunswick in Georgia on Sept. 9, 2019.

The St. Simons Sound Incident Unified Command said Thursday that crews had begun “cycling the chain back into the...

Golden Ray responders deal with impact of wreck fire

Following the recent fire in the interior of the Golden Ray wreck, St. Simons Sound Incident Response engineers have been continuing damage assessments of both the wreck itself and the equipment being used to cut it into sections and remove it.

Naval architects and response engineers are assessing the structure of the remaining wreck and the custom-fabricated lifting structures welded to its top. Meantime, wreck removal personnel continue to assess, repair and replace equipment on the VB-10000...

Fire blamed for latest Golden Ray dismantling delay

The removal of the Golden Ray wreckage from Georgia’s St. Simons Sound has been plagued by delays — the roll-on/roll-off vessel capsized in the early-morning hours of Sept. 9, 2019. Now the work to cut apart the car carrier has been brought to a screeching halt again, this time by a fire inside the wreck.

The fire erupted Friday afternoon inside the still partially intact vessel, which has been on its side near the Port of Brunswick since it ran aground and fell over.
