Transpacific rates hit new heights – now three times higher than Asia-Europe

Transpacific container shippers are paying more than three times as much as their Asia-North Europe counterparts, as freight rates on the headhaul leg from Asia to the west coast North America hit unprecedented highs.
According to new analysis from Alphaliner, after the Shanghai-Los Angeles SCFI spot rate reached a record $3,758 per feu on Friday, North American shippers and forwarders are now paying carriers $0.64 per nautical mile.

Carriers follow through with capacity discipline and blank more sailings

Ocean carriers are continuing with their “cautious” approach to capacity management, announcing a new series of blanked sailings in October.
Both the 2M and THE alliances have withdrawn headhaul capacity in weeks 40 to 44 to mitigate expected reduced demand due to the Chinese Golden Week holiday, the first week of next month.

Stressed carriers hold their breath during Golden Week as contract talks loom

China’s Golden Week traditionally marks the start of the slack season on the major tradelanes of Asia-Europe and the transpacific.
Before this week’s Chinese national holiday, container spot rates, as recorded by the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), had slumped to nigh year-to-date lows on both routes and there seems no reason to suggest there will be a recovery by the time the SCFI resumes publication on 10 October.

Spot container freight rates on the transpacific and Asia-Europe are coming under intense pressure ahead of a weak outlook for the markets following China’s Golden Week holiday factory shutdown the first week of October.
