Port of Halifax enjoyed banner year in 2022

The Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada, is touting a new record of “crossing the 600,000 [twenty-foot equivalent units] annual throughput threshold for the first time.” 

Halifax, along with the Port of Saint John in New Brunswick, is jockeying with other eastern coastal ports along North America to process more volumes. Halifax has access to eastern Canada and the U.S. Midwest through Canadian railway CN (NYSE: CNI), including the cities of Montreal, Toronto and Chicago.

Ports of Hamburg and Halifax ink MoU to decarbonise shipping corridor

The Halifax Port Authority and Hamburg Port Authority have announced their collaboration to decarbonise the shipping corridor between Halifax, on Canada’s east coast, and Hamburg, along Germany’s northwest coast.

The leaders of the two port authorities, Jens Meier, CEO of the Hamburg Port Authority, and Captain Allan Gray, president and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Hamburg on 29 September.

Port of Halifax gets CA$7M to build container examination facility

The Canadian government is investing CA$7 million (US$5.4 million) to build a marine container examination facility within the Port of Halifax in Nova Scotia that the government says will significantly reduce inspection turnaround times and port congestion.

Government funding will come from the National Trade Corridors Fund. The Halifax Port Authority will invest $8 million for the project, putting the total project investment at $15 million.

Halterm terminal planned to be expaned

The controversial plan by the Halifax Port Authority to temporarily extend the berth at the Halterm container terminal, is reported to be moving ahead as planned.

In a news release Wednesday (Oct. 24), the port authority announced that it’s board of directors and CEO had confirmed that work on the temporary south end container terminal berth should begin and has started to be implement its August 2018 board decision.
