Decline in global rankings prompts Hong Kong rethink on maritime and logistics

Hong Kong is planning to create a new transport bureau to enhance its status as an international maritime and logistics hub.
The proposed governmental move, announced this week, coincides with news that the city has fallen out of the top five maritime cities in the world, according to the annual report by Menon Economics and DNV.
Published yesterday, the 2022 report puts Hong Kong in seventh position, the top five rankings now …

Shippers kick back at ’empty promises’ from Hong Kong Seaport Alliance

The Hong Kong Seaport Alliance (HKSPA) has offered commitments to the city’s competition commission, after concerns its share of gateway cargo could be anti-competitive.
However, Hong Kong shippers describe the pledges, which include caps on service charges, as “paying lip service”.
The commission’s investigation, which began in January 2019 when the HKSPA was formed, found it was unlikely to give rise to competition concerns in the transhipment or barge markets,  as there …

Warning to shippers that IMO 2020 surcharges may be ‘profiteering’ by carriers

Cargo owners should be alert for IMO 2020 surcharge “profiteering” by container lines, according to the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council (HKSC).
HKSC executive director Sunny Ho said: “Shippers should note that these surcharges are on top of the normal bunker adjustment factor (BAF) and the low-sulphur fuel surcharge (LSS) carriers introduced late last year [in Hong Kong].”
He said the surcharges could not be justified because the 0.5% sulphur cap was a …
