Stockholm’s first hybrid ice-class passenger ferry launched

Stockholm shipping company Waxholmsbolaget has launched Stockholm’s first hybrid ice-going passenger ferry. The ship is powered by hybrid electric propulsion and is serving the Stockholm archipelago. It is able to transport up to 150 passengers.

The ferry will help Stockholm become a fossil fuel-free city by 2040, and provide transportation with lower noise and vibration levels.

Rolls-Royce receives AIP for hybrid tug propulsion technology

Rolls-Royce received Approval in Principle (AIP) from ABS for its hybrid propulsion system for tractor tugs. The AIP was granted after evaluating the world’s first hybrid tug, which will be the first tug boat installed with the Rolls-Royce hybrid propulsion system.

Namely, the Rolls-Royce vessel will be the world’s first hybrid tug and its design, by Jensen Maritime and Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, will be delivered to Baydelta Maritime LLC in February 2019.

Cruise ships to be powered by rotten fish byproduct

Norwegian cruise ships operator, Hurtigruten, decided to retrofit its ships to make them more eco-friendly, and plans to use a byproduct from dead fish and other organic waste in order to power their engines.
