Truckers honored as Highway Angels for feeding snowbound drivers

The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) recently named truck driver Jean-Carlo Gachet, from Chester, Virginia, a Highway Angel for offering a hot breakfast to stranded motorists. Canadian driver Matthew Marchand was also recognized for aiding stuck motorists.

Both were honored in connection with a standstill on Interstate 95 following a snowstorm.

Weekend nor’easter could slam I-95 corridor

There’s an increasing likelihood of a major winter storm — a classic nor’easter — slamming parts of New England and the Canadian Maritimes over the weekend.

The storm will hit from Friday night through Sunday, impacting truckers along the Interstate 95 corridor.

Major winter storm aiming for central, eastern US

If they’re able to run at all, truckers could hit a doozy of a winter storm over the next several days as it carves a path across the eastern U.S.

The storm will start in southern Canada, dumping 5 to 10 inches of snow in parts of the U.S. northern Plains and Midwest from late Thursday through Friday. This swath of snow will stretch more than 650 miles from northern North Dakota to northern Missouri.

Widespread blowing or drifting snow isn’t likely in...

FreightWaves Classics/Infrastructure: Connecticut Turnpike turns 63 (Part 2)

(To read Part 1 of this article, follow this link.)

Before construction on the Connecticut Turnpike began in 1955, construction had already begun on what would become the non-toll section of I-95 between Waterford and Stonington. This section was originally intended as an improvement to US 1 and opened in 1943 as a 3.6-mile-long, four-lane section of roadway between Waterford and in Groton. Part of it was the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, which was a toll bridge over the Thames River between New...

Potential nor’easter aiming for Northeast freight hubs

Just a few days after a snowstorm led to accidents that shut down a section of I-95 in Virginia for more than 24 hours, another storm will soon head toward the Northeast.

I started my normal 2 hour drive to DC at 1pm yesterday. 19 hours later, I’m still not near the Capitol. My office is in touch with @VaDOT to see how we can help other Virginians in this situation. Please stay safe everyone. pic.twitter.com/Sz1b1hZJZ5

Historically, Connecticut is part of New England as well as a tri-state area with New York and New Jersey, which together make up metropolitan New York City. It is the third smallest state by area, the 29th most populous and the fourth most densely populated of the 50 states.

As is the case with a number of other northeastern states, it has a turnpike. Unlike most of the other turnpikes in the region, however, it no longer charges tolls to use the highway.

Overview

Seventy years ago today, the New Jersey Turnpike (NJTP) was officially dedicated – despite not being completed yet. As the New York Times reported, “A major engineering feat, the new highway is an unimpeded route, without traffic lights, no cross roads, no left-hand turns and no grades over 3%.”

On this date in 1957, the 1.4-mile, four-lane Harbor Tunnel opened. It crosses under the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland. The tunnel ended the need for vehicles to use Baltimore streets, thereby avoiding 51 traffic signals. Before the tunnel opened, traveling on city streets was known as the “Baltimore Bottleneck” for East Coast traffic. Today, 64 years later, more than 25 million vehicles use the tunnel annually.

The Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway is signed as Interstate 895 (I-985). It...

FreightWaves Classics: Rhode Island established Board of Public Roads

On November 18, 1902, Rhode Island established the State Board of Public Roads “to oversee the construction, maintenance and improvement of the state’s highways system.”

Prior to its establishment, there was no state-level entity to “supervise and monitor work on public roads within Rhode Island; those duties were instead localized and decidedly scattershot.”

Major weekend flooding possible in mid-Atlantic

Millions of people are under alerts for coastal and inland flooding across the mid-Atlantic this weekend as a large and powerful low-pressure system moves toward the region.

“Right now we’re expecting it to be one of the worst tidal flooding events that we’ve had in the past 10 or 20 years for a lot of locations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” Chris Strong, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Sterling, Virginia, told CNN. “The biggest impact that we’re expecting here in...
