Better education on cargo declarations needed to prevent more containership fires

After the first boxship fire of the year was deemed to have been caused by misdeclared lithium batteries, forwarders have warned that shippers need to be better educated about cargo declarations, or face increased regulation.
According to Chinese shipping line Cosco, the fire onboard its 10,000 teu Cosco Pacific this month was caused by lithium batteries falsely declared as spare parts.

Online freight forwarder iContainers says 2019 was a year of uncertainty for the shipping industry, and that while certain sectors have seen improvements, the industry should remain alert for the challenges 2020 will bring.

Highlighting 2019’s events, iContainers says preparation for IMO 2020 and the United States-China trade war have been some of the biggest challenges for the industry.

Digital freight forwarder iContainers says there are two extra factors this year that are set to “further disrupt” and throw a wrench in the day-to-day management of the shipping peak season.

The ocean freight industry has recently been operating under a cloud of uncertainty from Brexit and the unpredictable US-China trade war.

According to iContainers, these usual culprits aside, this year’s peak season is expected to be hit by two more contributing factors that could eventually affect global...

Maritime Industry To Be ‘Shaken’ For The First Year Following IMO2020 – iContainers

pollution 3

Online freight forwarder iContainers says the maritime industry will be left ‘shaken’ for at least a year following the implementation of the IMO2020 regulation. The new rule, which will come into effect in under seven months, requires sulfur oxide emissions from maritime vessels to be reduced from the current 3.5 percent m/m to 0.5 percent m/m. Because of the costly compliance process, which is estimated to cost between $10 and $15 billion annually, carriers and shipowners are shifting a big...

Impact of IMO 2020 will cause ‘supply chain ripples for more than a year’

The path to complying with the IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap regulations on bunker fuel in six months’ time will be “rocky” for carriers, and leave the maritime industry “shaken” according to new guidance.
Several shippers and forwarding agents told The Loadstar at Multimodal in Birmingham yesterday they were more concerned about the potential negative impact of IMO 2020 on their supply chains, rather than the prospect of additional surcharges.
One shipper said his main carrier from Asia had advised...

Lack Of Solution To Trucking Shortage To Hurt US Exporters’ Competitiveness

COSCO HIT shipping port

Supply chain headaches continue for US shippers over a year since the hard enforcement of the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate that further exacerbated trucking shortage problems.

Congestions and delays as a result of a lack of truckers have caused an increase in overall shipping costs. According to online freight forwarder iContainers, this is expected to take a toll on US exporters, whose competitiveness on the global stage may be hurt.
