Russia fails to win reelection to IMO Council

The IMO Assembly has elected the members of the IMO Council for the 2024-2025 biennium —and, for the first time since 1960, Russia is not one of them.

The Assembly of the International Maritime Organization has just elected a new IMO Council for 2024-2025. Russia was not elected.

I welcome this just decision. In the last decade, no country has done more to undermine freedom of navigation than Russia.

IMO Council Expands Under Approved Amendments

  • Amendments to IMO Convention will be forwarded for adoption at IMO Assembly in December 2021.

  • The approvals were made at the 33rd extraordinary session of the Council, which was held virtually on 8 April 2021.

New 40 Member Council Elected To Supervise IMO Ahead of 2020

According to a Seatrade Maritime News report, the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has elected a new 40-member IMO Council that will be responsible, under the Assembly, for supervising the work of the international organisation.

Exceptions in Line-up

With only two exceptions the line-up is the same as for 2018-19, with just Argentina elected in place of Sweden in Category B, and Kuwait instead of Liberia in Category C.
