While the drayage function has been around for thousands of years, its importance has grown significantly in the past 70 years, following the introduction of the shipping container by Malcom McLean and his Sea-Land Corporation.

Forward Air adds West Coast intermodal drayage provider

Forward Air announced Monday the acquisition of intermodal drayage company Edgmon Trucking.

Located in Kent, Washington, Edgmon serves the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, operating a 5-acre facility in Kent and a 2-acre yard in Seattle. The company uses a fleet of roughly 70 trucks, mostly independent contractors, and a staff of 21 to facilitate its operations.

The purchase price of the deal was not disclosed but a press release said the company generates approximately $22 million in revenue each...

FreightWaves Classics: South Carolina Ports Authority contributes significantly to state economy

The ports of Georgetown and Charleston are managed by the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA). The ports are key to the state’s economy; directly or indirectly the ports generate 10% of all the jobs in South Carolina (over 187,000), and those jobs offer wages that are 32% higher than the state average. The SCPA states that the “ports are the most important strategic asset of the state, driving $63 billion in annual economic impact.”

GSC Logistics adds capacity amid West Coast container surge

Third-party logistics provider GSC Logistics announced Tuesday it would add 100 freight haulers to its network “as global trade booms.”

The Oakland, California-based company said the capacity additions would help expedite diverted cargo from congested ports to its customers in the San Francisco Bay area and the Pacific Northwest. The additions will increase its driver pool by almost 30% at the ports; 250 drivers in Oakland and 100 in Seattle. The new drivers are expected to be on board by summer.

ContainerPort Group adds FSI Inc. to portfolio

FSI to operate as CPG on Jan. 1

Trucking and intermodal drayage company ContainerPort Group announced that end-to-end intermodal provider FSI Inc. and its independent contractors will transition to the CPG brand on Jan. 1.

The acquisition closed in October. Financial terms were not disclosed.
