‘Freight recession’ snares J.B. Hunt in Q1

A falloff in container imports into the nation’s West Coast along with weaker domestic trucking volumes pushed J.B. Hunt Transport Services’ first-quarter results lower compared to a year ago.

J.B. Hunt (NASDAQ: JBHT) reported earnings per share of $1.89 Monday after the market closed, 40 cents lower year over year (y/y) and 12 cents below the consensus estimate.

In addition to the softer freight trends, the company contended with EPS headwinds that weren’t there last year. It took a loss...

September’s rail volumes reflect mixed signals of broader market

Are September rail volumes an indicator of wider economic factors like an economic slowdown or not? That’s a question observers might ask as they look at this past month’s railroad traffic.

U.S. rail volumes for September totaled 1.94 million carloads and intermodal units, a 3.1% decline from the same month in 2021, according to the Association of American Railroads. Of that, U.S. carloads totaled 928,590, down 1.1% year over year (y/y), intermodal units – containers and trailers — totaled 1.01...

J.B. Hunt sees runway for high demand; small carriers could struggle

JBI "turning down thousands of loads per week."

J.B. Hunt Transport Services continues to see demand for its services exceed capacity. Management from the company noted moderation in the spot truckload market on a call with analysts Monday night but said that pressure on rates is likely more of a hurdle for smaller carriers not operating under contractual arrangements.

“As we sit here today, demand for our services, and in particular the asset side of our business, is the strongest I’ve seen in my 27-year career at the company,” Chief...

Freight shipments fell 7.4% seasonally adjusted from December to January, according to a Monday report from Cass Information Systems. The volumes component of the Cass Freight Index was also 2.9% lower year-over-year. The report called out a rise in omicron cases as the reason.

The drop in volumes “is about as good an answer as we have to the question of how big an impact Omicron-related absenteeism and quarantines had on the freight economy,” ACT Research’s Tim Denoyer commented in the report.

All J.B. Hunt segments log growth for better-than-expected Q4

J.B. Hunt closes 2021 on a high

J.B. Hunt Transport Services provided little guidance around the outlook for 2022 on a Tuesday evening call with analysts. Limited visibility into when supply chain congestion will ease and rail service will improve has management holding the cards close to the vest. However, management is certain that J.B. Hunt will continue to invest in people and equipment to meet rising demand for all of its services.
