Secondary trades suffer as carriers continue to chase the big bucks

The cellular fleet grew by 4.5% last year, to 24.97m teu, but capacity was cut on some routes as carriers re-deployed as much tonnage as they could on the more lucrative east-west tradelanes.
According to today’s Alphaliner data, the transpacific carriers deployed a further 1.3m teu of capacity on the Asia-North America trade last year than in 2020, a huge 31% increase in slots – albeit that about half the extra …

Brexit proves to be a boon for Ireland-Europe direct services

Brexit has proved to be a boon for shipping lines operating direct services between the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and continental Europe.
According to new data from the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO), although ROI ro-ro volumes in the third quarter were virtually unchanged from the same period in 2019 (the most suitable period of comparison, given pre-Brexit stockpiling in Q3 20), the choice of route has changed dramatically.
Now, around 33% …

Deferring new UK-EU customs controls no ‘universal fix’ for underlying problems

The UK government must act now to address failings in its post-Brexit border operating policy if its much-welcomed postponement of border checks are to do more than just delay “disaster”.
UK Brexit mastermind Michael Gove informed Parliament late last week that pre-notification requirements for products of animal origin, animal by-products, and high-risk food not of animal origin, would be implemented in October, rather than April as originally planned.
It was also announced …

UK delays implementation of phased Brexit border checks

UK Brexit mastermind Michael Gove has informed Parliament that the UK will be delaying the roll out of its second and third phases of post-Brexit border procedures.
The news comes after weeks of growing concern that government’s phased implementation risked an existential collapse of the country’s supply chains, which have been placed under intense pressure by twin burdens of Brexit and the ongoing global pandemic.
Speculation emerged late last week that government …

Post-Brexit Northern Ireland volumes shipping via Scotland instead of Dublin

“Huge market distortion” is taking place across the UK port sector as supply chains adapt to post-Brexit trading.
Head of the UK ports authorities at Stena Line Ian Davies told the Northern Ireland Affairs parliamentary select committee that, at first glance, trade flows appeared comparable with 2020, with a slow start gradually leading to increased movements.
“Volumes have increased to ports in Scotland, Northern Ireland and England, but stepping back I can see huge market distortion,” he...

Trailer shortage fears as EU drivers question the viability of serving the UK

European road freight shipment visibility platform Transporeon has questioned the idea that Europe faces continent-wide trailer shortages as a result of increasing haulier reluctance to serve the UK post-Brexit.
Sources have told The Loadstar that red tape and associated delays were scaring-off EU drivers – paid per kilometre, and in some cases facing 12-hour delays – from coming to the UK without guarantees that they will be paid for round trips.
One source predicted that driver shortages...
