First woman tapped to lead South Carolina Ports

Barbara Melvin, South Carolina Ports’ chief operating officer, will be promoted to president and CEO effective July 1, 2022, succeeding Jim Newsome, who announced he is retiring after 13 years at the helm.

Melvin will be the first woman to lead a top-10 U.S. container port. She joined the South Carolina Ports Authority in 1998 and was named vice president of operations and terminals in 2015 and COO in 2018. As COO, Melvin oversees daily port operations and leads major infrastructure projects,...

Port of Charleston importing more consumer goods ‘than ever before’

The South Carolina Ports Authority largely has escaped the national mainstream media glare on U.S. port congestion. According to SCPA President and CEO Jim Newsome, that’s because the supply chain is not clogged at the Port of Charleston.

“The Port of Charleston is handling more retail goods, home goods, furniture, appliances and electronics than ever before,” Newsome said in a statement Tuesday. “While the global supply chain remains under tremendous pressure, SC Ports is fortunate to have...

South Carolina Ports CEO unpacks increasing pressure on ports

The pandemic-spawned import booms, capacity shortages and shutdowns have proved again and again the rigidity of port and supply chain infrastructure. After all, the port industry plans its infrastructure decades in advance, so increasing capacity overnight is nearly impossible. Some ports more than others, however, have demonstrated agility and operational foresight.

In an exclusive interview with FreightWaves, Jim Newsome, CEO and president of South Carolina Ports Authority, unpacked three...

South Carolina Ports finding groove with rail

The South Carolina Ports Authority blamed congestion at other ports on fewer container ships calling in February, “resulting in lower-than-expected volumes.”

The historic congestion in California’s San Pedro Bay has had a cascading effect on other U.S. ports. A snowstorm in the Northeast that put a temporary freeze on cargo movements at some ports also may have contributed to the slowdown in South Carolina, although weather was not mentioned in the SCPA’s press release Wednesday.

South Carolina Ports continues riding volume wave

The South Carolina Ports Authority said “impressive volumes” helped it end 2020 with its strongest December on record.

South Carolina Ports handled 209,606 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at the Wando Welch and North Charleston container terminals in December, a 11.6% year-over-year increase.

Loaded imports were up 14.4% year-over-year and loaded exports increased 8.6%, “highlighting a strong balance for ocean carriers and a thriving Southeast market,” the SCPA said in Monday’s announcement.

South Carolina Ports defends hybrid labor model

An unfair labor practice charge has been filed before any containers have been moved at the South Carolina Ports Authority’s new Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal.

At issue is a contract clause that basically says all work at a proposed terminal should be done by International Longshoremen’s Association workers. The SCPA argues the soon-to-open Leatherman Terminal at the Port of Charleston was laid out years before the clause was added to the contract.

Wednesday’s filing with the National Labor...

Among Piers: Cranes land in South Carolina

The arrival of the South Carolina Ports Authority’s 15 hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes served as a big sign that the first phase of the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal is nearing completion.

The RTG cranes arrived in North Charleston on Dec. 11 in a record-setting shipment for Shanghai-based manufacturer ZPMC. It was the most RTG cranes ever loaded by ZPMC onto one vessel bound for the United States.

The 15 cranes join four that arrived last month. Six more are set to arrive early in 2021, bringing...

South Carolina Ports: Southeast market ‘booming’

The South Carolina Ports Authority said the record-setting 207,066 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) it moved in November stand as evidence that global trade continues to rebound from coronavirus-forced shutdowns earlier in the year.

That November-best figure also represents a 12% year-over-year increase from the 184,928 TEUs handled at the Wando Welch and North Charleston container terminals in 2019.

“SC Ports had a truly remarkable month with a record November for containers handled as well...

Inland South Carolina ports set record

The South Carolina Ports Authority’s (SCPA) headline numbers did not come from the seashore.

The SCPA said Monday that its two inland ports had a record October with a combined total of 16,404 rail moves. Inland Port Greer reported 12,935 rail moves, up 9.2% year-over-year, and Inland Port Dillon had 3,469 rail moves, up nearly 40% from October 2019.

The SCPA said its overall October volumes “show an ongoing recovery and strength in containers, vehicles and inland ports.”

The ports authority...

South Carolina Ports on brink of ‘truly historic’ 2021

Jim Newsome, president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA), delivered his 12th State of the Port address virtually Wednesday.

“Usually I have the privilege of speaking to 800 well-attired leaders of the maritime community,” Newsome said, noting that although the annual in-person gathering was moved online because of the coronavirus pandemic, “this is a message of great optimism about our future.”

And Newsome didn’t dwell on the fact that the COVID-19...
