Tech developments may solve the ‘efficiency killer’: chronic port congestion

Just-in-time shipping and high-bay container storage could be the answer to the global port congestion crisis.
According to Emre Cebecioglu, smart ports business development manager at Wartsila, port congestion is one of the biggest issues facing the container shipping industry, labelling it an “efficiency killer”.
“The maritime industry is losing $85bn each year because port calls aren’t co-ordinated transparently or on time,” he said yesterday at the Seatrade Maritime Middle East conference.

JIT shipping trial and data sharing highlights fuel and emission savings

A just-in-time (JIT) shipping trial at the port of Rotterdam has highlighted the potential for “enormous” fuel and emission savings.
Across the industry, container vessels waste hundreds of days a year waiting for a berth, usually only receiving notice of berth availability around two hours’ sailing time from a port.
However, for the Rotterdam, Maersk, MSC and IMO trial, 26 vessel calls were analysed over a month and, by modelling two different …

Major digital step for NTB as it signs up with Portchain for berth optimisation

North Sea Terminal Bremerhaven (NTB) is the latest operator to sign-up for Portchain’s AI-powered berth optimisation engine, as the industry looks to tech to solve deteriorating schedule reliability.
Portchain claims its software will help NTB plan vessel berthing more effectively and enable sharing of berthing information in real-time with customers.
Thor Thorup, the Copenhagen firm’s chief commercial officer, said: “Berth optimisation is an important step in NTB’s ambitious digitisation...

Global JIT port call system that could cut berthing delays a step closer

Hundreds of days a year of wasted shipping time caused by berthing delays could be eliminated with a new universal just-in-time (JIT) port call system.
Shipping’s digital standards body, the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), today published standard data definitions for the port call process, the first step in its JIT Port Call programme.
The project is focused on helping the industry digitise the information flow that happens during a vessel call …
