Kirby agrees to pay $15.3 million damages in oil spill case

In a case relating to a 2014 incident, Houston-based Kirby Inland Marine LP has agreed to pay $15.3 million in damages and assessment costs under the Oil Pollution Act. Doing so resolves federal and state claims for injuries to natural resources resulting from an oil spill from a Kirby barge after a collision Kirby caused, says the U.S. Department of Justice.

Kirby awarded $17.4 million in Houston Channel collision case

In a July 8 ruling, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Vincent Brown has awarded Kirby Inland Marine $17,398,488 in a case stemming from the May 10, 2019, Houston Ship Channel incident in which the LPG carrier Genesis River collided with a 297 foot long tank barge being pushed ahead by the 69 foot long Kirby Inland Marine towing vessel Voyager.

Demand for Kirby’s inland tank barges sank in Q3

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX), the leading player in the U.S. inland tank-barge sector, posted better-than-expected Q3 2020 results on Thursday due to cost cuts and a tax gain, but its marine-sector metrics came in worse than feared.

The company reported net income of $27.5 million for Q3 2020 compared to $48 million in Q3 2019. Earnings per share of 46 cents exceeded analyst expectations for 36 cents.
