More freight-related layoffs hit Texas

Industry downturns caused by the coronavirus pandemic cost an additional 462 people their jobs, according to a new round of worker reduction notices to state officials on Friday.

According to reports, Spirit AeroSystems Inc., Basic Energy Services LP and Exterran Energy Solutions are among the transport and manufacturing industries that have conducted layoffs in recent days.

Mack Trucks is laying off 450 salaried workers at its North Carolina headquarters as part of global downsizing by Swedish parent Volvo Group (OTC: VLVLY). But it is holding the line for now against trimming more production jobs in Pennsylvania.

Volvo reports 38% drop in Q2 sales

Volvo Group (OTC: VLVLY) reported a 38% decrease in second-quarter sales as the COVID-19 pandemic racked its truck, bus and construction equipment units.

United Airlines to cut 4,700 employees in Houston, Dallas

United Airlines said Friday that it will lay off more than 4,700 workers in Houston and Dallas beginning Oct. 1, according to its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice filed in Texas.

The layoffs come as United said on Wednesday it could cut as many as 36,000 employees nationwide — nearly 40% of its workforce — due to the pandemic, which has crippled air travel globally.

Oklahoma trucking company shuts down citing coronavirus “disaster”
