  • Nine out of ten goods traded globally are transported by ship. Without shipping, we would not live in a globalised world.
  • The problem with ships, though, is that they mainly run on fossil fuels and are a massive contributor to global CO2 emissions.
  • The challenge is now on to plot a greener and, ultimately, carbon-free course.

A recent news article published in the DB talks about navigating towards a greener future.

Port of Corpus Christi reports record tonnage for LNG, agricultural goods

The Port of Corpus Christi logged record results during the first six months of the year, reporting it moved more than 80 million tons of cargo.

The largest gains came from a 72% year-over-year (YoY) increase in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports, as well as a 42% YoY increase in exports of agricultural commodities and a 3.6% YoY increase in crude oil exports.

Maritime History Notes: Pioneering LNG carriers

LNG oversea shipments began only 62 years ago.

The explosive growth in natural gas consumption was made possible by a revolutionary means of sea transportation.

Today, shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a routine maritime event. There is a fleet of over 300 ships capable of carrying such cargoes, including many ships with the ability to carry 100,000 tons or more. Earlier this month, it was reported that the daily charter rate for a ship was $350,000. This is the highest rate ever paid for a cargo ship. However, it was only 62 years...

Shifting Towards Green Shipping

In this decade, we’ll see more accelerated change in shipping fuels than we’ve seen in the last century. What does this heightened diversity mean for shipowners?

They must be nimbler than ever – a shift that requires work. It means “greening” supply chains, bolstering energy efficiency, nurturing more partnerships, streamlining costs, and becoming adept at green finance, says an article published in gulfnews.

All will help shipowners’ fuel portfolios adapt to the inevitable need for a greener...

New shipbuilding standard covers cryogenic piping in LNG-fueled ships

A new ASTM International standard will be helpful to those designing thermal insulation systems for cryogenic piping and equipment for liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled ship applications. ASTM’s committee on ships and marine technology (F25) developed the new standard.

“Correctly specifying the thermal insulation system for pipe and equipment on LNG-fueled ships is challenging,” ASTM International member Gordon Hart, consulting engineering, Artek Engineering, said in a statement announcing the...
