Transition to LNG Fuelled Shipping Might do More Harm than Good

  • The combined LNG-burning fleet that will be operational in 2030 is at risk of financial losses of US$850Bn, according to UCL researchers.
  • For policy makers, clarity on forthcoming regulations is urgently needed.
  • LNG could be available in 2030 if shipowners, operators, and charterers are willing to pay up to €216/GJ.

With multiple market forces fuelling an orderbook run that is increasingly made up of LNG-fuelled ships, the combined LNG-burning fleet that will be operational in 2030 is at risk...

SEA-LNG is disappointed to see the ongoing campaign of misinformation that misrepresents the progress the industry has made, and is continuing to make, to reduce slip. Sensationalist claims lacking scientific evidence are a transparent attempt to distract the industry from investing in LNG – a solution that can deliver immediate greenhouse gas emissions...

Lesser LNG Prices Spur Demand for Cleaner Fuels

Globally, LNG is expected to account for 10 per cent of overall marine fuel mix by 2030, up from less than 0.1 per cent last year.

  • The use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel ships is gaining traction in Asia amid a global push to use cleaner fuels in the sector.
  • This is mainly because abundant supplies are making the super-chilled fuel more affordable than oil.
  • The move could draw billions of dollars in investments from suppliers and buyers in gas storage, LNG-fuelled vessels and barges.
