2020 ship fuel overhaul will cost Russian oil firms billions

Rules mandating cleaner shipping fuels – set to take effect from 2020 – will hit Russia’s wallet. The country is the world’s largest exporter of high-sulphur oil and, according to Bloomberg, it does not look prepared for the change. Unlike its competitors in Europe and the US, which have braced themselves and made necessary changes, Russian companies have reportedly done very little. One analyst said the country had no chance …

The data showed growth of 4.9%, year on year with air freight forwarding up 5.3% and sea freight rising 4.3% – perhaps better than some expected. The numbers indicate full-year growth in the market of 4.1%, down considerably from last year’s 8% growth. But, as Ti notes, this is primarily …

World’s longest sea bridge opens in China, for freight

China has opened the world’s longest sea bridge, linking Hong Kong and Macau to the mainland. The 55km bridge officially opens tomorrow, but those in private vehicles wishing to cross it will be required to obtain a special permit. Its main purpose, The Guardian reports, is for shuttle buses and freight transport. End-of-year decisions for shippers

US-bound imports are on course for record high levels. Logistics Trends and Insights, citing Port Tracker, predicts that, between September and December, imports will grow 2.3% to 4.3% year on year. With ocean imports normally slowing after the September and October peaks, the 4% growth expected in December marks a significant upturn – especially considering the current tariff stand-off between China and the US. Port Tracker suggests this growth may be linked to the …

Trump’s trade war told through the story of a leather belt

Here’s a fascinating in-depth look from Bloomberg at how one supply chain is set to be affected by the accelerating tit-for-tat tariff war between the US and China. The manufacturing of leather belts is no one-way street: leather hides are a by-product of the US’s enormous beef industry, and China buys around half of all US production; where it is processed and some of which it then makes into belts …
