THE and the Ocean alliances have confirmed plans to merge a Mediterranean-US east coast service in December.
Subject to regulatory approval, the new service will see THE Alliance’s AL6 join with the Amerigo service operated by CMA CGM, Cosco and OOCL – Ocean Alliance member Evergreen is not part of the service and is not expected play a part in the new string.
The service will deploy six 8,000 teu vessels – three from …

Maersk issues new rules for stowage of dangerous goods on its box ships

Maersk Line has announced it is deploying new guidelines for the stowage of containers on its vessels.
And it wants the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to review its guidelines for the handling and carriage of dangerous goods.
The move follows a wide-ranging review, carried out in conjunction with classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), following the fire on the Maersk Honam this year, which resulted in five crew members losing their lives.
While the results …

Shippers want ‘a market approach’ dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharges

As crude oil races towards $100 a barrel, the European Shippers’ Council has called for “a market approach” dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharge mechanisms ahead of the IMO 2020 sulphur cap.
Brent crude hit a four-year high yesterday, at $82 per barrel, pushing up the price of IFO 380 heavy fuel oil (HFO) above $450 per ton.
The current cost of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) – compliant with the new regulations – is …

When I wrote that Damco was “the beating heart” of AP Møller Mærsk Group (APMM) in mid-2016 I had no idea that the corporate plan was to rip it up and leave what was left of its freight forwarding arm in a state of induced coma, before, presumably – as most of my sources suggest – selling those...

CMA CGM and MSC follow Maersk with bunker surcharges for IMO 2020

MSC and CMA CGM have followed Maersk Line in announcing plans for surcharges to recover the cost of compliance with the IMO’s 2020 0.5% sulphur cap regulations.
The French carrier said that although it was “in favour of using LSFO (low-sulphur fuel oil) for its fleet” it was also “ordering several scrubbers” – exhaust gas cleaning technology that allows ships to continue to burn the cheaper 3.5% sulphur content HFO (heavy fuel …

India’s forwarders eye more use of barges to reduce logistics costs

India’s government and logistics operators are looking to barges to bring down the cost and improve the routing of domestic cargo.
Promoting the use of barges was welcomed by the Federation of Freight Forwarders Association in India’s Debashis Dutta.
“Inland waterways offer the cheapest form of internal transport, and government is motivating companies to use this over road and rail,” Mr Dutta told The Loadstar on the sidelines of this week’s FIATA World …

Analysis: a Schenker IPO on the board’s agenda at Deutsche Bahn?

Corporate Germany and its financiers have never been busier: Deutsche Post-DHL last week announced a restructuring of its PeP unit; Thyssenkrupp has this month decided to spin off its shipbuilding business; and, finally, troubled lender Deutsche Bank could itself be a break-up candidate – if you believe the rumour mill.
Yet these latest news and speculation could be soon overshadowed by major corporate action which might be brewing in the secret rooms of …
