No happy new year for shippers: Maersk warns of more supply chain delays

Maersk has warned customers that global supply chains face another challenging year.
“Unfortunately, 2022 has not started off as we had hoped,” the carrier said. “The pandemic is still going strong and we are seeing new outbreaks impacting our ability to move your cargo.”
The carrier said the situation was “particularly challenging at several hub ports and gateway terminals”.
However, Maersk was able to report a significant improvement at its Antwerp terminals, where …

Maersk’s green methanol supplies still uncertain – CMA CGM sticks with LNG

Maersk has exercised options for an additional four 16,000 teu dual-fuel methanol ships for delivery in 2025, but says the supply of green methanol for them remains uncertain.
The options follow a last-August order for eight of the revolutionary, green-fuelled vessels with the South Korean yard of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for delivery in Q1 24.
Analysts at Ship & Bunker have calculated Maersk would need to source some 280,000 360,000 tonnes of …

Hapag-Lloyd the latest to adopt NCB dangerous cargo screening system

Hapag-Lloyd has adopted National Cargo Bureau’s Hazcheck Detect cargo screening tool, becoming the third top-ten carrier, after Maersk and ONE, to do so.
Like other systems of its type, Hazcheck scans bookings for suspicious key words – consignees misdeclaring hazardous cargo to secure cheaper rates are implicated in a number of major ship casualties and the loss of several lives.
“For example, some use ‘plant growth regulator’ when they wish to circumnavigate …

MSC the major ‘winner’ in 2021’s containership capacity race

MSC added 411,000 teu of capacity last year, mostly via second-hand containership purchases, for a growth of 10.7%, to 4,266,805 teu, according to Alphaliner data.
This compares with 2M partner Maersk’s conservative 3.4% capacity growth of 142,405 teu, to 4,279,305 teu, and other carrier rivals’ flat or negative tonnage growth in 2021.
MSC’s tonnage growth was especially impressive given that several of its acquisitions involved ships it already operated on charter.

More carriers eye scrubber installation as price gap between fuels gets wider

As the price gap between low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) widens, almost 30% of the global containership fleet capacity is now equipped with scrubber technology, according to an Alphaliner survey.
The consultant said the number of container vessels fitted with scrubbers increased by 150 last year, to 850 ships for 7.52m teu of capacity, with MSC continuing to lead the pack with nearly half its 640-strong fleet …

Services at the port of Ningbo are operating normally – although the Zhejiang Province government has instigated quarantine and disinfection action for the Beilun district of the city.
Three of Ningbo’s container terminals border Beilun district, where, reportedly, 23 people have tested positive for Covid-19 – Ningbo Beilun Container Terminal (NBCT), Ningbo Beilun Second (NBSCT) and Ningbo Beilun Third (NBTCT) – but there are no reports of infections in the port …

How ocean carriers dove deeper into logistics, air cargo in 2021

Large container ships at a marine terminal with ship-to-shore cranes reaching across.

For big ocean freight lines, 2021 was marked not only by record profits stemming from COVID-related constraints on shipping patterns and capacity but by significant steps toward transforming themselves into full-blown providers of inland logistics services. The trend is further blurring the line between freight forwarders and carriers.

For most of this century, an asset-light business model dominated the logistics sector. Leasing warehouses, trucks, and aircraft and using contract labor...
