Top 10 liners control 85% of market — and they’re not done yet

The extreme consolidation within the container liner sector is the kind of thing owners of tankers and bulk carriers can only dream of. The latest data from Alphaliner highlights the extent of liner consolidation, how soon the rankings will change, and how newbuilding orders will render the carrier arena even more concentrated than it already is.

The top 10 carriers now operate 85% of global shipping capacity. Four groups — Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM and COSCO — control more than half of capacity...

Best of times sure beats worst of times

The first quarter of 2021 was the best of times for the world’s ocean container shipping lines. Year-over-year comparisons of course are basically meaningless. Q1 2020 was the worst of times for much of the world as COVID-19 spread.

Still, in “normal” times, the ocean carriers see a slowdown in the first three months of a calendar year. The peak shipping season for the December holidays has passed. Asian factories have taken a break for Chinese New Year. Not so in 2021. Consumer demand for...

Yantian port’s Covid crisis deteriorates

The outbreak of Covid-19 seems to continue at the Port of Yantian in China with the shipping lines taking additional actions to face the situation and Maersk saying that due to further measures being implemented, increased congestion and vessel delays upwards of 14 days are expected in the port.

Hapag Lloyd will be making the following omissions, on the noted Transpacific services, in order to minimise vessel idle time and port congestion.

The German carrier said that the situation remains fluid...

2M Alliance revises Asia to USWC and Canada schedule

Due to the current challenging market situation impacting port activities, generating congestion and schedule delays across the supply chain, 2M Alliance is planning to adjust the sailing programme on its Transpacific West Coast US & Canada network.

With the schedule’s changes, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which comprises 2M Alliance with Maersk Line, said it aims to match the actual departure dates from Asia.

Maersk’s Skou suggests US$450/tonne bunker tax, MSC’s Toft backs carbon pricing and decarbonisation R&D fund

Søren Skou, CEO of AP Moller – Maersk, has proposed a carbon tax on ship fuel of at least US$450 per tonne of fuel, which translates to around US$150 per tonne of CO2.

The boss of the Danish giant described it as “a levy to bridge the gap between the fossil fuels consumed by vessels today and greener alternatives that are currently more expensive,” in his LinkedIn post on 2 June.

Two days later, Soren Toft, CEO of the second-largest container line in the world and 2M Alliance Maersk’s partner,...

Viewpoint: Is Yantian next pothole on maritime superhighway?

Supply chains around the world are about to experience another hiccup.

Yantian, serving 100 ships weekly as one of the busiest ports in the world, has been partially shut for the past week because of a COVID-19 outbreak. Given that Yantian processed 13.34 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2020, this slowdown will further hit lean and struggling supply chains.

Out of an abundance of caution, carriers like Maersk extended the suspension of vessels into the ports from May 31-June 6. In...
