After recently completing its first year flying parcels for DHL Express, Mesa Airlines will add another narrowbody freighter to its fledgling fleet early next year as it looks to expand its cargo division and realize greater economies of scale for the DHL business.

Cargo attracts small European passenger airlines

Three small passenger airlines new to the air cargo business are deploying temporary and fully converted freighters for the first time in the latest example of niche carriers branching out to take advantage of strong market conditions. The extra capacity is a positive — if small — positive development for an airfreight market that remains woefully short of supply.

Mesa Air to become first US airline to test drone delivery

Regional air carrier Mesa Air will become the first U.S. airline to enter the world of drone delivery. Mesa Air Group, the parent company of Mesa Air, has signed an agreement with drone provider Flirtey for four delivery drones with an option to purchase 500 additional drones.

Mesa (NASDAQ: MESA) and Flirtey said in a joint release they will target last-mile food delivery initially. The service will eventually be expanded in the U.S. and New Zealand.

Mesa Airlines makes first cargo flight for DHL

Mesa Air Group (NASDAQ: MESA), a regional carrier for American Airlines and United Airlines, announced it operated its first revenue-generating cargo flight for DHL Express on Monday from its hub at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Cargo is a new line of business for Mesa, which is operating two Boeing 737-400 converted freighters under a five-year contract with the express delivery company. The second aircraft is scheduled to enter service in November.

GECAS stocks up on 737-800 converted freighters

General Electric

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) said Wednesday it entered an agreement with Boeing (NYSE: BA) to convert 11 Boeing 737-800 passenger planes to all-cargo mode.

The deal includes options for Boeing to convert an additional nine 737-800s for the General Electric (NYSE: GE) subsidiary.

GECAS said its total 737-800 freighter conversion orderbook now stands at 74: 60 firm and 14 options. The orders in this latest tranche are scheduled for completion between 2022 and 2024.

Mesa Airlines envisions operating 10 DHL cargo jets by 2022

Mesa Airlines, a regional passenger airline, expects its cargo business with DHL Express to quickly grow and become profitable by proving it can meet linehaul delivery requirements for the burgeoning e-commerce sector, Chairman and CEO Jonathan Ornstein said Monday.

Mesa (NASDAQ: MESA), the first regional airline in the U.S. to enter the narrow-body cargo business, could be operating 10 aircraft for the express delivery company within 18 months if plans proceed as expected, he said.
