MetalCraft Marine delivers a first-of-its-kind FireCat

MetalCraft Marine’s Kingston, Ontario, shipyard has completed what it calls a “behemoth” of a fireboat for the Kuwait Fire Service, whose director, General Mosa Ackbar set the basic requirements for the vessel. He needed very high towers that could shoot huge volumes of water over and across the high decks of oil carriers. Kuwait exports approximately 2,000,000 barrels of oil per day and, as oil fires are very hard to put out, the boat would need a massive amount of petroleum extinguishing foam.

Military contracts help keep shipyards in operation

Shipyards that sign military contracts to build for Uncle Sam’s Navy, Coast Guard and even the Army and Air Force usually have a financial leg up over those that don’t. Many such contracts run into the millions of dollars, some into billions of dollars.

The government doesn’t just give these contracts away, however. Shipyards, building in steel or aluminum, have to learn how to deal with the military construction guidelines laid out by the government.
