Global LNG Imports Edged Up In 2020 By 0.4% Y-O-Y

Global LNG imports edged up in 2020 by 0.4% year on year to 356.1 million mt, industry body GIIGNL said in its annual report published April 27, reports Platts.

Challenges

In the report, GIIGNL said LNG trade had proven to be “resilient” despite the challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, though the rate of growth was well down on the 13% year-on-year increase in 2019.

Eight new LNG import terminals were commissioned in 2020, the report said — two in Brazil and one each in Bahrain,...

Truck Talk: No fuelin’ around edition

This week, we’ve got gas — natural gas, renewable natural gas and renewable diesel fuel. Amid the buzz around battery-electric trucks, drop-in fuels often get short shrift. That might be shortsighted.

It’s a gas

Except for devoted fleets — think refuse haulers, school buses and some small and midsize fleets — natural gas gets little respect and practically no sustained growth. Though it is far cheaper and pollutes less, it is still a fossil fuel derived...

Biofuel production boosted by CMA CGM

Marseille, France, headquartered ocean shipping behemoth CMA CGM has announced it is supporting the production of 12,000 tonnes of biomethane.

That’s equivalent of two 1,400-TEU LNG-powered ships on an intra-European service (between St Petersburg and Rotterdam) for a whole year, the company said in a statement.

Maritime History Notes: Pioneering LNG carriers

LNG oversea shipments began only 62 years ago.

The explosive growth in natural gas consumption was made possible by a revolutionary means of sea transportation.

Today, shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a routine maritime event. There is a fleet of over 300 ships capable of carrying such cargoes, including many ships with the ability to carry 100,000 tons or more. Earlier this month, it was reported that the daily charter rate for a ship was $350,000. This is the highest rate ever paid for a cargo ship. However, it was only 62 years...

IEA’s Report States The Impact Of Reducing Methane Emissions

Reducing methane emissions from oil and gas operations is among the most cost-effective and impactful actions that governments can take to achieve global climate goals, said the International Energy Agency (IEA) in a new report, says an article published on Safety4Sea.

Methane

Although methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than CO2 – around 12 years, compared with centuries for CO2 – it absorbs much more energy while in the atmosphere, so it is a potent greenhouse gas with important...

Gas glut sees seaborne-trade increase but LNG future is uncertain

In the latest “Resources and Energy Quarterly” (December 2020), the Chief Economist notes that volumes of seaborne LNG have increased despite COVID because of a massive gas glut.

While LNG appears to have a near-term future as a transition fuel, its longer term future appears to be uncertain owing to the desire for cleaner...

Manufacturing Alternative Fuel Without Environmental Footprint

An enormous engine that generally propels large ships across the sea is now being used by engineers for testing liquid ammonia, reports BBC.

The ground-breaking project

An enormous engine, at a test centre in Copenhagen is being supervised by engineers from a control room resembling a ship’s bridge.

Such an engine that would be propelling a large ship across the sea, is now being prepared to take part in a project where engineers want to see if it runs on liquid ammonia.

After IMO 2020, decarbonization in spotlight for shipping sector: Fuel for Thought

LNG fueled shipping fleet

Shipping companies in Asia and around the globe are steaming ahead with efforts to minimize their carbon footprint as the urgency to decarbonize intensifies after a fairly smooth transition to the International Maritime Organization’s low-sulfur mandate for marine fuels.

The IMO in April 2018 laid out its strategy to reduce the shipping industry’s total greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 by at least 50% from 2008 levels, and to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work by at least 40% by 2030.
