Maersk collaborating on e-methanol plant in Asia

Maersk and five other companies are partnering to create an e-methanol plant in Asia.

Six companies in the shipping and energy industry signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday to establish “Asia’s first green e-methanol plant,” which will convert captured biogenic carbon dioxide and green hydrogen into methanol.

Biogenic carbon dioxide is emitted as organic matter decomposes. Green hydrogen, the other input to e-methanol, is produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electrolyzers powered by renewable energy.

The six companies are:

Maersk partners with 6 companies to advance production of green methanol

Maersk entered into partnerships with six companies to ramp up production of green methanol.

A.P. Møller – Maersk announced on Thursday it entered into partnerships with six energy and fuel companies to source at least 730,000 metric tons of green methanol by the end of 2025.

The companies are CIMC Enric, European Energy, Green Technology Bank (GTB), Orsted, Proman and WasteFuel.

A vision at sea: Maersk’s methanol-powered vessels taking shape

Maersk released images for its dual fuel methanol-powered vessels.

A.P. Møller – Maersk entered an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in August to build eight large dual-fuel container vessels, powered by carbon-neutral methanol or very low sulfur fuel oil.

Now Maersk has released a computer-generated image and video of what the vessels will look like.

E-methanol: Missing piece to shipping’s decarbonization puzzle?

E-methanol has many benefits for decarbonizing the shipping sector, but there are still some hurdles to overcome.

Approximately 80% of the world’s traded goods move via ship. But the shipping industry is also responsible for 2%-3% of global carbon emissions, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics. While shipping is one of the most efficient modes of transportation, the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels has made the path to decarbonization difficult.

That has shone a spotlight on e-methanol as a potential solution.

E-methanol is produced by combining green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide from...

Maersk invests in bio-methanol production company WasteFuel

Maersk invested in WasteFuels to produce bio-methanol.

A.P. Møller – Maersk is putting more pieces of the puzzle in place to decarbonize its shipping fleet. Maersk Growth, a corporate venture arm of the company, on Wednesday invested in WasteFuel to produce green bio-methanol.

This announcement follows two August agreements Maersk signed to build eight methanol-powered ocean vessels and produce the carbon-neutral e-methanol to power those ships.

California-based startup WasteFuel is developing and expanding its offering of low-carbon fuels such as...

Maersk enters agreement for 8 methanol-powered vessels

Maersk entered an agreement for 8 methanol dual fuel container vessels.

A.P. Moller – Maersk entered an agreement Tuesday with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to build eight large dual fuel container vessels, powered by carbon-neutral methanol or very low sulfur fuel oil.

The vessels are expected to save around 1 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. The dual fuel capability will make up 10%-15% of the total cost of each vessel, according to Maersk, but it will also give the company more flexibility if fuel supply is limited.

The first of the eight vessels...

CMA CGM steering LNG-powered ships to US

CMA CGM Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé recently announced that the France-headquartered company would dedicate six liquefied natural gas-powered container ships to the U.S. market as part of its drive to propel the energy transition of the shipping industry.

The first of these six container ships, which each will have a capacity to carry 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) will be delivered in October. All six will be operational by the end of 2022, CMA CGM said. The vessels will be...
